INTERNSHIP POSITION

Position: Organic farm internship/apprentice
Type: full-time internship with accom., meals, stipend, more (see below)
Organization: Fragrant Pearl Farm
Location: Seeley's Bay (near Kingston), Ontario

Fragrant Pearl Farm is located near Kingston in Eastern Ontario and was originally my father's organic beef operation and family homestead. My love of the rural lifestyle inspired me to earn a degree in crop science (also have one in film studies). Some years later as the new millennia began, I started to grow garlic which became the largest organic garlic farm in Eastern Ontario.Sadly now not in operation. Both my parents and I practiced sustainable agriculture. The farm has been free of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) for over 40 years. My parents passed away and thus began a long standing legal squabble over the property. It lay abandoned for many years.

During that period it fell into disrepair and suffered under the hands of vandals. In early 2016 I was awarded title to the land and returned that spring to begin repairs.  Much was accomplished in the summer/Fall of 2016 and into 2017 regarding renovations to the house but buildings are still in need or repair.

At this juncture I should also inform you that I have an eye problem that prevents me from currently driving. So any intern arriving at the farm will have driving duties.

For 2017 I intend to continue to grow a vegetable garden and perhaps raise some livestock. I also have some bees. I have the typical machinery found on a farm such as tractor, truck, rototiller, chainsaw etc.

Duties may include planting seeds and transplanting, compost making, soil health and fertility, irrigation, pruning, weed, pest and disease management, succession planting, post-harvest handling, cooking and preserving food, animal husbandry, fencing, firewood gathering and general farm maintenance. There are also several large restoration projects that remain to be tackled.

Detailed instructions will be given to develop the skills necessary to perform tasks on the farm.

I am looking for one or two enthusiastic and diligent farm apprentices for the Spring to Fall of 2017.

Individuals must have a STRONG WORK ETHIC and BE HONEST, but hopefully too also possess a  great sense of humour and joie de vivre.. Let's have fun as we work together.

Basically I am an easy going fun loving individual who really appreciates all that life has to offer and doesn't consider wealth, power or fame to be my defining interest in life. Though these qualities don't mitigate the desire to enjoy hard work  and do well in life.

A few years back I resided for a couple of years at a spiritual retreat centre. Peace and the simple things in life are things I now tend to gravitate towards. I am well traveled and use to live in Asia so am very tolerant and open minded.

In your free time you can experiment with your own projects, hike or cycle, go swimming or fishing at the nearby lake or try your hand at primitive life skills which I can teach you for I am a survival expert. If hunting is your thing you can learn long bow or cross bow skills. Permaculture, which I regard as nothing more than old fashioned common sense organic gardening and livestock rearing, off-grid living and home brew power systems are a passion as well. I am single with no nearby family so life on the farm can be pretty quiet at times. If you are interested I can teach you the finer points about meditation. Kingston is a large nearby heritage city with an historic downtown and farmers market.

While I grow organic vegetables in the summer for on farm consumption and canning, , the produce and other groceries I purchase are not for the most part organic. If you have food issues, or require only organic products, best you not apply to this listing. Life on the farm is rustic and somewhat austere so this is something else to consider. I have a dog.

I offer each intern accommodation in the main farm house or camper and all meals plus a monthly stipend of $100. A completion bonus of $500 or $1000 is also offered depending on length of stay. Work hours are very moderate at only 25 per week. As well there will be a few household chores to do, some cooking and driving to town on occasion.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to manage and grow your own sustainable farm.
