Scales Nature Park is a 21 hectare conservation area located just south of Orillia, Ontario. The focus of this facility is the conservation of reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and the habitats that these animals require.
Duties will vary with the nature of each position, but will include:
participate in habitat restoration and stewardship projects such as invasive species removal, native species plantings, microhabitat creation, wetland creation, road mitigation
participate in the maintenance and development of nature trails, demonstration gardens, challenges course elements, interpretive facilities, etc.
Supervise volunteers (adult and youth) and other staff working on assorted projects
Conduct public engagement and education activities such as guided nature trail walks, etc.
Survey for species at risk (i.e. snakes, birds) as appropriate
Assist with operations such as animal care, outreach programs, and field research as required
Duration: Varies with position, approximately 16 weeks with extension up to one year internship possible
Salary: Varies depending on position, $490 - $560 / week. Shared accommodations may be available.
Able to follow detailed instructions, stay organized, task switch and prioritize conflicting goals
Ability to work in a variety of conditions (cold, heat, sun, biting insects, tired volunteers, etc.)
Valid class G or G2 driver’s license and good driving record
Oral communication and people skills, time management and leadership skills
Experience with a variety of tools and equipment, chainsaw certification is an asset
Experience with light construction, landscaping, vehicle maintenance, etc. is an asset
Flexibility regarding scheduling according to the needs of projects
Ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations
Internal motivation and the ability to work without supervision
Positive attitude and passion for the conservation of reptiles and amphibians
