Position: Anishnaabeg Tree Whisperers
Organization: Green Thumbs Growing Kids
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Every morning, students in Toronto District School Board schools hear a Land Acknowledgement. We at Green Thumbs aim to build on this awareness with real land-based education.
Green Thumbs Growing Kids runs school garden projects including raising Urban Trees from Seed. The tree species are all indigenous to this area, and are trees that can tolerate urban conditions. Grade 3 children in various schools will be collecting and sowing the tree seeds, and transplanting them out to schoolground tree nurseries. In the longer term, students will help to locate the trees to their permanent homes in residential yards.
We are looking for Anishnaabemowin/Ojibway/Oji-Cree speakers (it's okay to be a beginner) to help with the Urban Trees from Seed workshops, teaching the indigenous name(s) for the tree, making signage, and sharing stories (in English and/or French). These are independent contractor(s) positions.
Additional requirements: an interest in teaching children, an interest and experience in outdoor education and knowledge of trees, a clear Vulnerable Sector police reference check. You will be working with our Garden and Food Educator. The work is occasional and travel to different schools will be required.
Please reply to jobs greenthumbsto.org* with Tree Project in the subject line. Send resume & cover letter in one document, by March 30 at 5 pm. Only those chosen for an interview will be contacted.
