EVENT COORDINATOR JOBS

Position: Event Coordinator and Experience Manager
Organization: The Front Street Community Oven
Location: Wolfville, Nova Scotia

The Front Street Community Oven seeks to hire an Experience Manager and Event coordinator to implement innovative and Covid-safe programming at the Front Street Community Oven.

The Oven is a wood-fired oven built by the community, for the community, in Robie Tufts Park, Wolfville. We offer private bookings (for families, birthdays, etc.), weekly Open Ovens where anyone can come and use the Oven, and other events such as multi-cultural cooking workshops, and more. Our aim is to create a space for connection, skill-building, and appreciation of local and international foods and cultures. The Event Coordinator and Experience Manager will organize and manage all of these offers, and ensure welcoming, safe experiences for our volunteers and guests. The person in this role will also support impact measurement, event promotion and communications, and support the board in developing a social enterprise model for the Oven. Last, but not least, they will set up a system that will allow the Oven to continue smooth operations into the fall (beyond this work term).

Responsibilities

  • organize volunteers, including volunteer training, onboarding, scheduling
  • ensuring volunteers maintain impact measurement logs
  • manage private Oven bookings, including assigning volunteers, checking supplies, and following Covid protocols
  • organize and coordinate other events (e.g. weekly Open Ovens, bread-making workshops, or multi-cultural events)
  • manage event budgets
  • manage social media/newsletter communications and event promotion
  • meeting regularly with their supervisor (one of our board members)
  • writing monthly reports on key activities to the board (bullet-point format)

Qualifications

The following skills and experience are considered an asset:

  • experience with hosting groups and creating welcoming spaces
  • event coordination, management
  • volunteer management
  • experience in marketing, promotion, communications
  • experience with budget management and project management
  • excellent communication skills (in person, on phone, in writing)
  • solid writing skills regarding tone, grammar and spelling
  • Canadian Food Handlers Certificate would be an asset

Working Conditions

This role requires working both on the computer (remotely from home), and outdoors. The Oven operates in most weather, except when a weather warning is issued. At times, the employee will be required to light the Oven or keep it going, so comfort with handling the fire inside the Oven is required. Full training on how to safely operate the Oven will be provided at contract start.

The Coordinator will work independently, reporting to and receiving support from the Board of Directors. This position provides an opportunity to deepen your skills.

This position requires some flexibility regarding working hours: The Oven operates 7 days a week, with some events hosted on evenings and weekends; while the coordinator will not have to be present for all events, some evening and weekend work will be required (time can be taken off in lieu to make up for those hours).

Those with allergies should know that the work environment means you may get in contact with various foods, including allergens such as peanuts, nuts, flours, gluten, etc.

Work term, hours & pay

  • 3.5 month term; June - September 2021
  • Start date: June 20 (some flexibility possible)
  • $ 13.10 / hr
  • 20 hr work week, with flexible hours - including weekends and evenings, with the opportunity to take time off in lieu

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs; as such, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
