Position: Instructor/Nature Mentor

Soaring Eagle Nature School is seeking an Instructor/Nature Mentor to join our team to offer unique Summer Camps and programs for kids in the beautiful forests and beaches of the Lower Mainland. This is an opportunity to share your gifts with youth through nature-based mentoring and passion-based learning.

  • Soaring Eagle Nature School is seeking an Instructor/Nature Mentor for Summer Camps 2020.
  • This position has the option to extend to become ongoing in the 2020-21 school year (Sept - June)

We are looking for committed and resourceful individuals to become a part of our team of Summer Camp instructors/nature mentors. There is also the possibility of continuing as an instructor for year-long programs starting in the fall.

This is a chance to be a part of a school that comes from the lineage of the Wilderness Awareness School and the 8 Shields Model. You will be immersed in a mentoring model that can be applied to any school or organization. You will gain skills and experience from experienced and well-trained mentors who have been working and using this model for years.

Responsibilities would include and are not limited to:

  • Full time instructor for the summer of 2020 working with kids aged 4-12
  • Passion and knowledge about some of the following: survival skills, wildlife tracking, edible and medicinal plants, navigation, forest ecology, knife safety skills, bird language and identification
  • Development and implementation of age specific programming for kids aged 4-12
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with students, parents and other staff
  • Maintain all relevant paper work and administrative support for programs
  • If you like, the position may extend Sept 2020 – June 2021 to instruct for weekly, monthly, weekend programs, as well as contract programs and school group programs. This position would also include subbing for other staff and facilitating contract programs.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate familiarity and understanding of the following:

  • Desire to use your gifts to help guide people into a closer connection with the natural world
  • Naturalist skills as well as earth based living skills/primitive skills
  • Experience working with children and youth aged 4-12
  • Excellent group facilitation skills
  • Understanding and practice of effective, clear and compassionate communication skills
  • Comfort in handling student and family affairs in a competent, open and professional way;
  • Creative and crafty with a love of making cool things with your hands out of natural materials
  • Exercise a healthy sense of humour


  • Minimum 2 year experience in nature-based mentoring with children
  • Standard First Aid (will be required by date of hire)
  • Clear Criminal Record Check (will be required by date of hire)

Preferred, but not required to apply:

  • Familiarity with Coyote Mentoring/8 shields model (developed by Jon Young and Wilderness Awareness School)
  • Graduate of the Anake Program and the Anake Leadership Program, RDNA program or similar program
  • Graduate of the Kamana Naturalist Program, or equivalent
  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in education or environmental degree
  • Child Development Expertise
  • Wilderness First Aid

Start Date:

June 22, 2020. Summer Camp Staff Training is June 22-26. Hours are full time in the summer. Last day of Summer Camp is August 28.

If applying to continue in the fall, this position is a range of 21-30 hours per week September - June. (Hours based on availability and experience.)


Starting wage $20-$23 based on experience and availability.
1 week paid training. (Mandatory attendance June 22-26)
Paid bi-weekly.
