NATURE INTERPRETER

Position: Reptile Educator/ Nature Interpreter
Organization: Scales Nature Park
Location: Based near Orillia, with travel throughout Ontario. Accommodations available on site.

Scales Nature Park is a 21 hectare conservation area located just south of Orillia, Ontario. The focus of this facility is the conservation of reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and the habitats that these animals require.

Duties are varied but will include:

  • perform outreach and on-site educational programs about reptiles, amphibians, fish, and other topics, to a variety of audiences, including large groups of 300+
  • assist with scheduling programs, communicating with clients and venues, and other administrative tasks
  • assist with the maintenance of a large collection of reptiles and amphibians, plus trail and facilities maintenance
  • assist with the operations and development of a nature centre and related programs, supervising volunteers, etc.
  • assist with field research, program evaluations, data analyses, and other technical tasks

Duration: Six month to one year internship, depending on funding, immediate start possible

Salary: Based on $15/hour, 40 hours per week

Strong oral communications skills required. Position requires speaking to the public, answering questions, and supervising the handling of animals. Positive attitude and willingness to help people get over their fears are essential. A passion for reptiles and their conservation is an asset. Strong organizational skills are required, including extensive use of spreadsheets, calendar apps, etc. Valid G driver’s license and good driving record required. Flexibility regarding scheduling is important. Shared accommodations are available on-site. This position provides an opportunity to grow into a full time co-ordinator of education with a dynamic conservation organization with multi-faceted operations across Ontario. Candidates should be eligible for funding under the federal Youth Employment Strategy.

Candidates should enjoy working both indoors and outdoors, in a variety of settings. The ability to thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations and a communal live/work environment is important. Candidates should enjoy sharing space, tasks, and social activities with other staff and volunteers from around the world.
