Location: Inuvik, Northwest Territories

The Fisheries Resource Specialist, Fisheries Joint Management Committee (FJMC), will be part of a two-person team that will provide staff and resource support for the Committee. The Fisheries Resource Specialist will perform administrative functions, provide biological expertise and advice to the Committee, assist in the design and conduct of the Committee’s annual programs, provide project contract management, maintain a registration and monitoring system for public fishing on Inuvialuit lands, and liaise with staff and members of other committees, organizations and community members. Activities are primarily in office; however, there will be travel to a variety of meetings both within and external to the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. Occasional travel will be required for project supervision and participation in field projects as well as attending fisheries conferences and meetings.

The Joint Secretariat requires a highly motivated individual with a Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences or an equivalent mixture of experience and training in a natural resources or fisheries science field or position. Knowledge of Inuvialuit fish and marine mammal harvesting practices, experience in environmental assessment and habitat management programs or training or education in a relevant field would be an asset. The individual should be well organized, exhibit tact and good judgement, self-motivated, and be capable of establishing productive relationships with community organizations, scientists, researchers and managers in university and government organizations. Familiarity with Inuvialuktun is desirable, but not essential.

Experience and demonstrated skills with personal computer based systems and programs is essential. Individual should possess excellent writing and communication skills.

This position reports to the Executive Director, Joint Secretariat with functional direction for position activities provided by the Chair, FJMC. The actual salary level will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The benefits package includes a Settlement Allowance of $5,425.00, Housing Allowance of $6,500.00, Pension Benefit of 6% of base salary (all benefits are per annum). There is also a Vacation Travel Benefit after one year of $4,000.00.
