Reporting to the General Manager of Planning and Development Services (PDS), the Director, Climate and Environment is accountable to lead a team in this newly established business unit. In addition to shaping this new business unit, you will provide leadership, strategic oversight, accountability and cross-corporate collaboration for The City of Calgary’s climate and environment responsibilities, including functions such as Corporate and Calgary municipality climate and environment leadership and management, watershed planning, urban conservation, biodiversity, and energy management.

As a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT), you will be expected to foster an inclusive leadership approach that promotes equity, diversity and inclusion, as well as psychological and physical safety. As a strategic thinker, you will possess a high degree of political acumen, have experience in leading transformational change and enabling innovation.

Primary duties include:

  • Developing strong relationships and working with a variety of stakeholders – internally and externally – to achieve common climate and environment goals.
  • Environment leadership, including planning and policy development, program implementation, environment, biodiversity, watershed analysis and management, assurance and reporting.
  • Climate leadership toward the management of energy, greenhouse gases, carbon and climate resilience for both the Corporation of The City of Calgary and the Calgary municipality.
  • Leading the climate change strategy and action plans, supporting a more sustainable Calgary, advancing climate equity, and incorporating a robust governance, reporting and accountability model.
  • Advocate for climate action, watershed planning, urban conservation, biodiversity, and natural environment sustainability on behalf of The City of Calgary, its citizens, communities and businesses.
  • Provide leadership, management of the Climate and Natural Environment Business Unit to ensure the programs are in line with the City's Strategic Objectives .
  • Represent The City's interests in City shaping, and other climate and natural environment priorities.


  • A degree in a climate or environment related field (for example; Environmental Engineering, Climate Change Science, Earth Science, Environmental Geoscience, Urban Planning, Public Administration or related), or a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), with at least 10 years of progressively responsible leadership and management experience in a complex organization, including in climate or environment functions.
  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education will be considered.

Compensation: Director Band 2 $131,500 - 200,000 per annum
Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day work week, earning 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
