Position: Food Production work exchange
Type: full season position May 1 - Oct 30, live on-site (covered tent platforms), some food, monthly stipend, more (see below)
Organization: Salt Spring Sprouts and Mushrooms
Location: Salt Spring Island, British Columbia
Salt Spring Sprouts and Mushrooms and the Feral Farm are seeking self-motivated, engaged, and fun-loving individuals for our 2018 work exchange opportunity. Located on 6 1/2 mostly forested acres, our fledgling permaculture homestead is entering its fifth year. Young apple, pear, plum, mulberry, peach, fig, hazel and cherry trees are entering into their initial productive stages. Our subsistence vegetable, herbaceous and bramble guilds require upkeep and expansion and we're establishing a 20'x60' greenhouse.
Three days per week (~20hr/week) are dedicated to supporting our successful, small-scale, home-based food business. Once a month, each participant will have the opportunity to work at one of our local farmers markets. We also ask for a minimum of 4 hours per week for land-based participation.
The indoor work is physically unchallenging, set in a relaxed, music infused commercial kitchen environment. We are proud to be supporting ourselves solely on the revenue of food production. Participants will learn about the myriad nutritional and sustainability benefits of consuming a diversity of fresh organic live foods. In addition, gain familiarity with organic mushroom production (shiitake, pearl oyster, and lion's mane) and the fundamental roll fungus plays in our internal and external worlds.
Opportunities abound in learning about and participating in subsistence-scale vegetable production (we are not market gardeners!) and preservation, whole foods cooking, kombucha, sauerkraut and kimchi, compost building, community dynamics, bed making (double dig, lasagna), efficient water usage, cover cropping, humanure, and soil building to name a few. Self-motivation, a positive attitude, and personal engagement are key. We do not offer a formalized learning curriculum, but rather an opportunity to practice/explore some skills/interests related to homesteading in the beautiful Gulf Island region of SW British Columbia.
Work exchange runs from May 1st - October 30th and participants receive a monthly stipend and a season-end bonus. We are not seeking applicants for less than the full season at this juncture. Food security enthusiasts can apply to: firstname.lastname@example.org
