Position: Food Hub Operations Worker

South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH) and the SVNH Food Hub and Spoke program are located on the unceded, occupied, ancestral and traditional homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We recognize the vast cultural diversity of Indigenous people and acknowledge the heterogeneity of their opinions, representation, needs and desires. We dedicate ourselves to walking in solidarity beside our Coast Salish neighbours and South Vancouver community members as we work collectively towards food resiliency and sovereignty.

South Vancouver Neighborhood House has recently established a Food Hub and community food distribution program for residents across the Sunset, Victoria- Fraserview and Killarney neighborhoods. We are looking for an enthusiastic and responsible individual who is passionate about food justice issues to join our Food Team and support the SVNH Food Hub and Spoke program. The Food Hub Operations Worker will be responsible for supporting internal operations and grocery box packing for food insecure residents across the Sunset, Victoria-Fraserview and Killarney neighbourhoods of South Vancouver.

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead volunteers to sort and pack healthy food boxes for families, seniors and residents experiencing food insecurity
  • Train and support volunteers to be engaged, clear on tasks and follow food safety standards
  • Assist with receiving and shipping weekly food deliveries, tracking inventory, sorting donated food, maintaining an organized and tidy warehouse, and other internal operations as needed
  • Maintain positive relationships with agency partners and volunteers to ensure food is distributed in a timely manner
  • Incorporate community and volunteer feedback into program delivery
  • Support volunteer recruitment and community engagement as needed

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience working or volunteering in non-profit sector/community settings
  • Experience or education related to food security, land and food systems, nutrition, food services, social work or community services preferred
  • Passion for food and equity/social justice issues
  • Able to obtain a clear criminal record check
  • Abe to work in a multi-cultural setting
  • Fluency in English is required; fluency of another language commonly spoken in South Vancouver (Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Punjabi, Arabic, Farsi) is preferred
  • Must be physically able to move/stand for extended periods of time and lift 25-40 lbs
  • Valid FoodSafe Level 1
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License is an asset
  • First Aid Certification is an asset

Employment Terms:

  • This is a part-time position at 14 hours per week starting the week of October 4, 2021 with funding guaranteed until March 31, 2022. The position will continue after March 2022 if funding is secured.
  • Applicants must be available Thursdays from 9am-3:30pm; remaining weekday schedule will be mutually determined.
  • $19.51 per hour
