Hiring: GreenForceTO Landscaper

GreenForceTO is a pilot project initiated in 2021 by the City of Toronto in partnership with RAINscapeTO and Building Up to maintain horticultural and green infrastructure sites in public streets and sidewalks, and create local employment opportunities. Job purpose

The GreenForceTO Landscaper will be part of a small team involved in the maintenance of plantings, lawn, sidewalks and green infrastructure across the City of Toronto. No previous experience is required. The position consists of paid training and site work. Transportation between sites is provided and a TTC monthly pass will be provided for transportation to and from job start location.

Duties and responsibilities

The GreenForceTO Landscaper will perform tasks associated with the maintenance, testing and minor repairs of green infrastructure in streets, sidewalks and plantings under the guidance and direction of the project manager and in collaboration with the team members. Some of these tasks include:

  • Weeding and removal of invasive species;
  • Pruning, deadheading, raking, mowing, trimming;
  • Litter / garbage clean-up;
  • Clearing and cleaning of inlets, trench drains, and catch basins;
  • Maintaining and testing permeable paving;
  • Digging, grading and laying soil and compost;
  • Planting and transplanting perennials, grasses, shrubs, trees;
  • Laying mulch and installing other materials (i.e gravel, rocks, logs);
  • Cleaning, maintenance and responsible use of hand and motorized tools;
  • Meeting all health & safety standards while performing duties in a safe and responsible manner in the public realm;
  • Being conscientious and professional in communication with team members and the public;
  • Communicating professionally with team members and project manager through email, phone, text;
  • Completing written assignments and attending one-on-one meetings about performance, personal goals and professional development plan.

Successful candidates will receive online and hands-on training that includes First Aid, CPR, and the basics of green infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Over 18 years of age;
  • Interest and enthusiasm for environmental issues and ecological practices;
  • Physically capable of performing required duties - stamina and strength to lift 50 lbs / 23 kg;
  • Takes direction & guidance while performing tasks;
  • Adaptable and flexible to perform various roles / responsibilities within a team;
  • Takes initiative and is proactive in completing remaining tasks for job completion;
  • Enjoys working outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, rain, cold);
  • Enjoys working as part of a team; is present and participates in team conversations;
  • Responsible, punctual, detail-oriented, reliable;
  • Ensures that work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner and follows health and safety guidelines;
  • Ability to properly and safely handle & operate power and hand tools required for landscape maintenance and construction;
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English both verbally and in writing, including regular use and understanding of email through which training information is distributed.
  • Ability to communicate positively and respectfully to manage public interactions and contribute to teamwork.
  • Preference given to candidates with ‘G’ Class driver’s license.

Working conditions

  • 7 hours of physically demanding labour daily;
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions (heat, drought, rain);
  • Repetitive tasks;
  • Ability to manage the nature of work in the public realm;
  • Physical fitness and flexibility / dexterity – kneeling, crouching, bending, digging, shovelling, raking, carrying heavy materials and loads.

Compensation

This is a full-time seasonal position, 35 hours a week at an hourly rate of $21.00.
