Associate Landscape Designer and Community Landscape Technician Positions

Ontario Flora is a social enterprise that offers a native plant nursery, landscape design, community greening and educational services. We bring people and nature together, we support and create greening initiatives with wild plants. Our native plant nursery is located in Grey-Bruce north of Toronto. Our work can be throughout Southern Ontario.

Ontario Flora, is looking to hire a part- time as needed Associate Landscape Designer as well as a Community Landscape Technician, for GTA locations. These positions are for a self-employed individual on a subcontractor basis. We are looking ideally for a person who would like to fulfill both roles but will accept applications for one or the other role.

Responsibilities of Landscape Designer:

  • Assess project requirements and help with AutoCAD drafting as needed
  • Create specifications for eco constructed elements such as rain gardens, bioswales, bridges, paths etc.
  • Develop final construction details that show the landscapes appearance and description for construction, garden crews to follow
  • Coordinate locate requests, permits, and other administration as required
  • Coordinate with vendors to purchase project materials as necessary
  • Identifying project goals, resolving potential problems and delays
  • Traveling to gardens to meet other crew members (using own vehicle with paid travel during working hours), completing site measurement and analysis of landforms independently without supervision as required
  • The ability to complete grading plans for constructed elements an asset
  • This role may include occasional out of GTA projects, so flexibility for some travel is required for one or two projects per year
  • Experience gardening and designing with native plants would be a great asset

Responsibilities as Community Landscape Technician:

  • Traveling to gardens independently and meeting other crew members (using own vehicle with travel and mileage paid) to gardens, completing weeding, watering, spring and fall cleanups. May times this may be a public park, a residential or commercial property, church, a school or condo
  • Coordinating and working with community member clients often while at the gardens of charities and schools (depending upon restrictions in place during COVID) is required on an as needed basis, so experience in outdoor education and community engagement is an asset
  • Installing new gardens with Ontario Flora crew members
  • A facility to master the identification of new native plant species quickly on the job is an asset, and experience gardening and designing with these plants would be a great asset
  • This role may include occasional out of GTA projects, so flexibility for some travel is required for one or two projects per year
  • Working alone for this position is required once trained for some maintenance activities. Independent travel is required by car throughout the GTA

Skills and Qualifications for Both Positions:

  • Willingness to coordinate a work schedule that best fits your personal schedule as well as works with Ontario Flora’s projects. Flexibility to juggle priorities an asset
  • For the Landscape Design position, a diploma or degree in Landscape Design or Architecture with 3+ years of producing scale drawings and specifications of landscape designs using AutoCAD or Draftsight, Sketchup 3D modelling a great asset.
  • For the Community Landscape Technician position, 2 years experience in garden maintenance and/ or community garden coordination is needed
  • Minimal hardscape (stone, carpentry) construction skills are needed, however the ability to be energetic for installation work, and to lift heavier landscape objects over 40 pounds is required
  • Some design of community engagement projects that require some creative installation

Schedule and Locations:

  • The schedule could be as projects dictate, negotioable, from 0 days per week some weeks to 5 days per week
  • Monday to Friday with some Saturday or Sunday as per availability
  • Work as Landscape Designer occurs remotely while drafting (need for your own computer, home office and CAD programs), as well as on site as required
  • Seasonal starting date approximately April 15th and through to Nov 15th 2021 as need

Hourly Rate:

  • $23-$30.00 negotiable commensurate with experience
