KITCHEN MANAGER, LOCAL FOOD

Position: Kitchen Connect Operations Manager
Organization: Victoria Community Food Hub Society
Location: Victoria, BC

Are you an entrepreneurial team player who is excited about supporting local food businesses? This role is part relationship/ community building and part facilities management with operational oversight of the facility and a small team. You will have a hand in developing, creating and implementing systems to ensure that Kitchen Connect is welcoming, operational, clean, safe and profitable. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who enjoys working with their peers, is detail-oriented, has a strong focus on building relationships in the food community and experience in the workings of a commercial kitchen or processing centre.

Victoria Community Food Hub Society (VCFHS) is working to develop vital regional infrastructure, programs and services that not only increase the distribution of good healthy local food to the community, but also build a stronger resilient food economy that supports farmers, processors and food distribution services. The Kitchen Connect facility includes: a commercial kitchen, HACCP ready kitchen, teaching and training spaces, refrigerated and dry storage areas. The Hub will offer facility rentals, food skills training programs, business development support, social enterprise development. The Operations Manager will be working to synergize the different program integration and initiatives that combine volunteers and trainees, facility rentals of commercial and teaching kitchens, processing space, incubator space, storage, meeting and event space, and industry specific business development services.

In the initial stages the Operations Manager will work closely with the Development Manager to complete construction of the food hub and implement the administrative systems to support the management of the Hub. Ops Manager will have available a half time communications specialist, bi weekly team meetings and mentorship to assist in areas of learning.

Ongoing the role will include oversight of the operations, managing the facilities, rentals, programs and development/ implementation of all healthy and safety protocols. This work will involve collaborating with local food system participants to connect them with the support that they need to create, grow, and scale local food businesses. A kitchen/processing assistant is planned as an early step in the expansion of the Hub.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Oversee direction and vision of the Kitchen Connect and HACCP Certified Processing Center working in collaboration with staff and the VCFHS board.

2. Drive Food Hub Business Development

3. Provide sound financial Management

4. Facilities Management

5. General management

QUALIFICATIONS (Some flexibility as trainings may be available):

  • Two or more years experience in kitchen or processing facility
  • Two years experience in Kitchen administration including budget planning, sales and hiring
  • An understanding and knowledge of the region, organizations, local government and other key actors related to regional food systems is an asset
  • Experience in community engagement with a focus on promoting inclusivity and cultural safety is welcomed
  • Post secondary degree in Food systems, Business or related areas.
  • Experience in client relations, including building relationships and understanding others

  • Ability to oversee the management and execution of marketing plans and communications

  • Experience in communications work that includes a commitment to our evolving equity & inclusion framework
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines
  • Strong writing ability and fluency in English

TERMS:

  • Position will start Fall 2022
  • Full Time: 35 hours a week
  • Pay band for the position is $25 - $28 per hour based on skills and experience.
  • $45,500 to $50,960 annual salary
  • VCFHS Health Benefits are available after probationary period complete
  • Regular weekday, daytime hours on site with some flexibility to accommodate family life
