Want to spend your fall in the land of the polar bears?

Type: f/t contracts, early October through late November; includes housing (see below)

Natural Habitat Adventures is seeking experienced kitchen staff to assist with the preparation of breakfast and lunch for our tour groups during the polar bear season in Churchill, Manitoba. The staff provides food for up to 100 people daily for 7-week season. This is an independent contractor position from early October through late November.

Each day, tour groups spend the day out on the tundra viewing polar bears from a rover and lunch is served on the rover. The staff will work overnight in the kitchen of one of the town hotels to prepare and pack lunch for each of the groups traveling on the tundra that day. The kitchen staff also prepares a buffet breakfast for the guests staying at the hotel. The work shift for this position generally begins shortly after midnight and finishes mid-morning.

Sample responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work alongside a head chef in the creation of innovative breakfast and lunch menus with variety and balance in food items.
  • Accept and accommodate special dietary needs (both those that are forewarned and those that appear without warning). Respond to feedback effectively.
  • Wash dishes, bus tables and maintain a clean work area
  • Deliver food items on time
  • Manage leftovers effectively
  • Communicate in a friendly manner with guides, ops staff and members of the hotel staff

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have at least 4 years’ experience in a kitchen setting. Experience in the travel industry (lodges, expedition ships, etc.) highly preferred. Fluency in English. Ability to walk, stand and/or bend continuously to perform essential job functions. Ability to work under pressure and deal with stressful situations during busy periods. Ability to make independent decisions and respond to the needs of guests. Ability to work overnight. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. High levels of integrity, maturity, patience and enthusiasm. Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
