Position: Director of Programs
Organization: Artisanal Gold Council

The Artisanal Gold Council (AGC) is a not-for-profit organization based in Victoria, Canada. The AGC is dedicated to improving the opportunities, environment, and health of the millions of people involved in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in the developing world. Led by a multidisciplinary team of experts, the AGC is one of the few agencies in the world that has the sustainable development of the ASGM sector as its core mission.

Established in 2007, the AGC is known for innovation. We develop practical solutions to the challenges of the sector based on our deep field experience in artisanal and small-scale mining communities around the world. The AGC employs an integrated approach to our programs focused on improved practices, governance, health, the environment, gender, markets and livelihoods, and sharing knowledge.

Working closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Finance, senior staff, and the Board of Directors, the Director of Programs (DoP) will be a key member of the senior management team. They will occupy a leadership role in the organization and as such will collaborate on overall strategic planning, implementation and oversight of short and long-term program strategies, and develop and monitor program operating plans. The DoP will ensure all operational plans are aligned with the Artisanal Gold Council’s overall mission, objectives, strategies and brand enhancement. They will oversee the work of staff members and volunteers and ensure strong mechanisms for communication and coordination between them are in place to achieve success. The position reports directly to the Executive Director. Along with graduate level education and at least five years of related senior operational sector experience, The DoP will possess proven strengths in developing, training and leading staff and management. They will possess superior communication skills and will be a key participant in strengthening AGC's networking activities and outreach.

Organizational Leadership, Development, and Operations

  • Work with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to fulfill the organizational mission.
  • Develop and implement strategic organizational plans.
  • Promote awareness and visibility for the organization in a variety of forums
  • Foster and maintain relationships with donor agencies, community partners, government entities, educational organizations, businesses, and other partners.
  • Help grow revenues through fund development, business development, innovative fundraising programs, and grants.
  • Manage and provide guidance to the organization team structure including their selection, development and performance management.
  • Lead program and project design and assist project managers in adapting delivery of current projects when required.
  • Direct project managers and other staff and ensure that program implementation is effective. This will occasionally require project site visits.
  • Encourage regular communication and coordination between AGC staff.
  • Track projects and collaboratively work with Executive Director on developments and issues through regular communications and meetings
  • Participate in and assist project managers with funder reporting.


The successful candidate will:

  • Have at least a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • Ideally have an in-depth understanding of artisanal and small-scale mining through prior work experience
  • Have significant experience serving in a senior leadership position of a development program or institution.
  • Be detail oriented and able to work effectively at the granular and coarse project level
  • Demonstrate a creative approach with a history of innovation, entrepreneurialism and leading organizational change.
  • Be a strong communicator in person and in writing.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with staff, funders, and at conferences and other fora.
  • Be able to work in a professional and collegial manner with partners, funders, institutions and other stakeholders that are part of the AGC’s greater network.
  • Be able to work in Canada

Note that the successful candidate would be eligible for participation in benefit options offered to AGC employees, following a probationary period.
