Position: Interim Executive Director (Contract - Maternity Leave)

Position Description: EcoSpark is seeking a visionary, dynamic and committed individual with an entrepreneurial spirit for the position of Interim Executive Director. We are looking for an individual with broad-based environmental knowledge who possesses proven skills in strategic plan implementation; operational planning and financial management; evaluation and reporting; program design and proposal writing; revenue generation; and partnership development.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leadership
    • Implement and report against progress of the 2017 - 2021 strategic plan
    • Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization
    • Foster effective team work among Board, partners and staff
    • Act as a spokesperson for the organization
  • Fundraising
    • Implement and update fundraising plan
    • Secure adequate program and unrestricted funding for the operation of the organization (including actively and creatively pursuing opportunities from government, foundations, corporations, and individual donors)
    • Maintain and build positive relationships with funders
  • Financial management
    • Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed, as well as prepare for annual financial audit
    • Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved 2019 budget and complete financial reporting to funders (e.g., cash flow estimations, deferral accounting on a quarterly and year-end basis)
    • Work with Accounting to provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditures of the organization
  • Human resources and program management
    • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs, services and special projects
    • Build capacity of staff through effective performance management, mentoring, engagement and training
    • Ensure compliance with human resources and administrative policies and procedures
    • Recruit staff that have the ability to help further the organization's mission, as required
  • Community relations/communications
    • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, partners, decision-makers, and other organizations to help achieve the mission
    • Oversee and implement communications strategy, including enhancing presence on traditional and social media


  • University degree, preferably a graduate degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least five years of leadership experience required
  • Proven skills and knowledge in the areas of: fundraising, financial, human resources, and project management
  • Superior communicator and experience in implementing communications plans and strategies
  • Previous experience working in an environmental NGO preferred
  • Previous experience working with and/or on a Board preferred
  • Additional assets: experience working with a wide variety of stakeholders, experience in volunteer management, knowledge of environmental policies and the Ontario planning/policy environment, understanding of citizen science
  • Valid driver’s license

Compensation: $60,000 - $70,000 (commensurate with experience)

Start Date and Duration: 16-month contract, beginning October 1, 2018

Location: Toronto, ON with travel as needed within the Greater Golden Horseshoe
