Good Food for All

Everyone should have access to healthy food, soil, and community. We enact this vision by cultivating engaging gardens and programs that catalyze healthy eating, ecological stewardship, and community celebration. Fresh Roots stewards 1/2-acre market gardens on school grounds across the lower mainland. Our fields produce good food for the community, empower youth through vocational skills development, and serve as handson outdoor classrooms for over 5000 students each year.

The Position

The Schoolyard Farm Worker is a full-time 7-month position growing Good Food For All. We’re looking for a keen farmer who thrives in a fast paced environment. You must enjoy working outside in all weather and love to share your food and farming knowledge with others. In collaboration with our Farm Manager, you will ensure our schoolyard farms are productive and welcoming spaces. You will also provide leadership to Farm Interns and youth and adult volunteers to complete daily tasks on the farm. Together you’ll help to sell our produce at the local farmer’s market and prepare it for our CSA.

Qualifications

  • Must Qualify for Agriculture Canada’s Green Internships Stream:
    • Canadian post-secondary graduates; and
    • 30 years or younger when they started the internship
    • Must not have been previously employed full time by the applicant
    • Must not have participated in any other Youth Employment Strategy programs (ie. Career Focus); and
    • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Minimum 1 season growing experience in small-scale agricultural production
  • Physically fit and happy to work outdoors in all conditions
  • Comfortable with spreadsheets, email communication, and record keeping
  • Experience leading co-workers and/or volunteers
  • Able to work with a team and independently
  • Able to communicate with diplomacy and respect with all people
  • Have a valid class 5 driver’s license and comfortable driving a large vehicle
  • Able to pass a criminal background check

Key Details

Hours will vary with the seasons. Spring and late fall will be approximately 30 hours a week and summer will be 40 hours a week. Pay DOE, but not less than $15/hr.
