Urban Roots Youth Program Co-ordinator

Position: Youth Program Leader
Reports to: Executive Director, Green Thumbs Growing Kids
Organization: Green Thumbs Growing Kids
Location: Toronto, Ontario

Green Thumbs Growing Kids empowers children, youth and their families to learn about, grow and prepare fresh foods, learn about nature and the environment, and works to foster a positive educational experience. The Urban Roots Youth programs take place after school from March through November. The successful candidate will have experience working with youth and a working knowledge of greenhouse and garden tasks related to food production. Food production, sustainable food knowledge and food justice work highly valued. Candidates with experience and/or interest in social enterprise especially welcome.

Schedule: 24 hrs/wk – three-month contract starting April 2. Possibility of extension. $22/hr.

Description of Duties:

  • Manage greenhouse and garden-based programs with youth aged 15-29
  • Supervise and train youth to help run garden programs
  • Promote the Urban Roots Youth program in the community
  • Develop, test and refine curriculum relating to food systems, horticulture, urban agriculture, food justice, culturally relevant foods, and food security
  • Work with partners to ensure program spaces are full
  • Evaluate and help to hire youth for summer job positions
  • Help supervise interns, co-op students and volunteers in collaboration with
    Volunteer Co-ordinator
  • Manage supplies for Urban Roots Youth program, collaborating with the Children’s Garden & Food Educator
  • Support youth participants to staff farmers’ market stall or Good Food Market


  • Post-secondary certificate or degree in humanities and/or science/agriculture
  • Experience developing and delivering youth programs
  • Experience gardening and running garden programs
  • Experience on public school grounds an asset
  • Extraordinary communication skills, ability to work in a fast-paced non-office environment
  • Bicycle is an asset; and confidence riding with a trailer.
