JOB POSTING

Position: Toronto Operations Lead
Organization: Hop Compost
Location: Toronto, Ontario

We're Hop, a craft compost company.

We’re seeking a full-time employee to start immediately as Operations Lead in our upcoming Toronto facility.

As Operations Lead, you will manage Hop’s Toronto team and all aspects of our daily process, from our waste collection route to our organic compost manufacturing.

    • Regular overtime
  • Offer
    • $50,000 annual salary
    • 2,000 stock options in Hop
    • $1,000 performance bonus evaluated February 1st
    • The potential for raises and further bonuses
    • SunLife benefits, including wellness account
    • Two weeks paid vacation time

    • Getting hands-on with Canada’s top organic compost
    • Saving 8,000,000 pounds of waste from landfill in 2018

The Role

In its first 3 months, this role will be instrumental in launching the Hop Toronto facility. The Operations Lead will be responsible for:

  • Directing construction at the facility;
  • Managing our technology installation;
  • Negotiating pricing to acquire ancillary equipment;
  • And leading our local hiring process.

Once Hop Toronto has been launched, this role will grow. The Operations Lead will be responsible for:

  • Team management and scheduling;
  • Active quality responses in our waste collection service and our organic compost product;
  • Repair and maintenance troubleshooting and contractor management;
  • Data recording and regulatory reporting;
  • And process efficiency or safety improvements.

The Operations Lead typically invests more time in hands-on involvement and labour than in management at a desk. Because Hop is a startup, the role is intensive, with uncertainty, speed, and change. Hours may fluctuate, and the Operations Lead must be able to contribute overtime in early mornings, nights, and weekends when necessary.

The Application

Hop isn’t easy, but it is very rewarding. If you’re ready to operate Toronto’s closed loop, send us your resume and a cover letter, which must include responses to these questions:

  1. Answer in one sentence:
    1. Have you worked in a startup?
    2. Have you managed a team of 10 or more?
    3. Have you worked in a manufacturing facility?
    4. Have you completed a post-secondary education?
    5. Have you volunteered in the last year?
  2. Answer in one paragraph:
    1. What operation do you look up to, and why?
    2. Tell us about a time when you performed through a stressful challenge.
    3. What is one unique solution you delivered for a company in the past?

Please send your application via email to info@hopcompost.com

Application Deadline: 5pm EST on November 26, 2017

The Company

Hop uses patented technology to build inner-city compost facilities. Using these central facilities, Hop collects food waste from local restaurants, and processes it into Canada’s most nutrient-rich organic compost for local growers. With operations in Calgary and Vancouver, Hop has now saved over 8 million pounds of waste and 10 million pounds of emissions. Currently, the company is growing at a rate of 10% every month, and opening a closed loop for local food in new cities. We are a certified B Corp, and believe in the power of business and technology to solve pressing sustainability issues.
