Position: Sustainability Analyst Trainee
Type: 3-month paid full-time position, possibility of extension

Corporate Knights Analyst-Trainee Position Corporate Knights Inc. is seeking a finance and sustainability savvy excel wizard to join our research team. This person will work with the Director of Research to collect, manipulate and analyze large amounts of data to support the preparation of Corporate Knights’ ESG (environment, social and governance) research reports. This person will have significant opportunity to contribute to the CK Clean Revenue Project calculating the proportion of revenue earned from “clean” products and services. We are looking for someone energetic who likes to take initiative. There is a lot of room for growth and skills development in this role for those who are eager to learn.

Skills

  1. Ability to interpret income statements
  2. Ability to consistently refine and apply “clean” definition to revenue lines
  3. Advanced Excel capabilities (PERCENTRANK with multiple criteria, VLOOKUP, Fuzzy lookup, INDEX, MATCH, nested IF–AND-OR statements, ISBLANK, ISTEXT, ISNUMBER, COUNTIF(S), SUMIF(S), PIVOT, conditional formatting among others)
  4. Familiarity with data integrity problems such as leading or trailing spaces, metadata, hidden zeros and their impact on excel calculations. Ability thereof to solve such problems.
  5. Ensuring ongoing historical database completeness which requires among other things extracting data from multiple workbooks.
  6. Ability to extract data from various forms of documents – PDF, HTML into Excel format.

Research

  1. Familiarity in navigating and extracting to Excel Bloomberg data – financial and ESG, as well as Thomson Reuters and FactSet is an advantage
  2. Navigating the internet, and especially corporate websites to find and verify items of data
  3. An understanding of financial statements, financial statement items, financial disclosure requirements and basic differences across several jurisdictions around the world, sustainability/ESG/CSR reports as well as the ESG disclosure environment and the various stakeholders is an advantage
  4. Resourcefulness: ability to search the internet to educate oneself on the above aspects.

Self-check

  1. Ability to set up tests to verify the accuracy of formulas, of data manipulations and transformations – whether the intended results were generated, resolving any problem thereof.
  2. Managing time constraints: ability to come up with alternative solutions when faced with research time constraints.

This is a 3-month paid full-time position located in downtown Toronto, with the possibility of extension. The successful candidate will also receive reimbursement for transit pass and gym membership.
