Position: Cooking for Change Animator
Organization: North York Harvest Food Bank
Location: North York, Toronto, Ontario

Since 1986 North York Harvest Food Bank has been the primary food bank in northern Toronto. In 2015 we distributed over 2 million pounds of food through our 47 member agencies running over 70 community programs.

An independent, charitable organization, we envision a community where all members are able to meet their food needs. Our mission is to engage our community in meeting the food needs of northern Toronto by providing dignified food assistance, education and long-term food solutions.

Position Summary:

The Cooking for Change Animator will take on a leadership role in the coordination of the Seniors Cooking for Change project. This project aims to use community kitchens as a means to engage seniors living in the Bathurst Finch neighbourhood in issues that matter to them. Each kitchen session will serve as a forum for discussion, an opportunity to introduce new concepts and partners, and a meeting place for action planning. The Animator will recruit and work alongside a steering committee made up of 6-8 engaged residents. This project will tie to existing campaigns and initiatives will involve partnership with the local Action for Neighbourhood Change and other local organizations.

Reporting Relationship:

The Cooking for Change Animator reports to the Senior Manager, Program Services


10 hours per week for 24 weeks, starting March 5, 2018


$20 per hour

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, coordinates and supports Cooking for Change steering committee
  • Coordinates weekly community kitchen session and plans all related tasks (purchasing food, menu planning, managing supplies and budget etc)
  • Works with community agencies and residents to identify issues that are relevant to them
  • Connects participants with relevant campaigns and initiatives
  • Identifies and performs outreach for partner organizations
  • Facilitates outreach and promotion, in partnership with steering committee
  • Tracks participant attendance and other data required for the purposes of grant reporting
  • Takes lead on program evaluation


  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of food security and poverty issues
  • Knowledge of and experience in community kitchens or facilitated cooking
  • Experience facilitating group discussions
  • Experience with facilitating campaigns and advocacy work an asset
  • Knowledge of anti-oppression and anti-racism practice desired
  • Experience working in low-income, diverse communities
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
  • Computer proficiency in common office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with Bathurst Finch Community an asset
