Job Description:

World Vision Canada (WVC) engages directly with Canadian companies and in related government policy conversations to advance the well-being of the world’s most vulnerable girls and boys and their families. For companies to contribute positively to child well-being, there is a need for a focus on sustainable, inclusive development, socially and environmentally-responsible business practices, transparency, and alignment with the self-identified needs and priorities of developing countries.

Our engagement with the private sector is diverse: we work directly with companies to deliver impact on the ground, to raise funding to support WVC programs, to promote potential shared-value partnerships, and to influence their operations and policies for the sake of child rights and well-being. WVC also engages with the Canadian government to advance policies and regulations that promote responsible business.

The primary purpose of the Advisor, Responsible Business position is to strengthen WVC’s capacity to promote responsible operations and policies of companies which operate in, source from, or provide services to developing contexts in which World Vision works. Special attention will be paid to mining and to retail supply chains. The Advisor will use her/his knowledge of responsible business practices, of corporate engagement, and of government engagement, to support the work of senior World Vision (WV) staff, and to engage directly at a working level with companies and government. The advisor will utilize a broad range of research and analytical skills to develop advice, recommendations and strategies for engagement which are clear, logical, well-written, and accurate. The Advisor will work closely with other Corporate Engagement stakeholders across WVC (and the wider WV Partnership) to promote responsible business practices for any Canadian company which WV engages. Ultimately this will result in deepened transformational partnerships with Canadian companies to meet WV’s mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides advice and support to WV initiatives with respect to the responsible operations and policy of Canadian businesses in development contexts. (40%)
    • Within WV, promotes constructive, holistic engagement of Canadian corporations where their operations impact development, bringing the lens of children’s rights and responsible business practices to the table.
    • Monitors and supports positioning WVC within Government of Canada policy, regulatory and programming conversations with regard to corporations present in the international development space.
    • Supports processes for other global WV offices who wish to engage Canadian companies present in places where WV works.
    • Participates in global World Vision fora on corporate engagement, bringing the lens of responsible business practices.
  • Provides advice and support to WV initiatives with respect to the responsible operations and policy of Canadian mining companies in development contexts (40%)
    • Provides advice and support to WV offices and regions where Canadian mining companies are impacting development.
    • Supports representation, or represent WVC, at Canadian fora addressing the intersection of development and extractives.
    • Monitors and supports positioning WVC within Government of Canada programming and policy on extractives and development.
    • Provide technical support to WVC funding proposals where extractives contexts are included.
  • Administers WVC corporate due diligence function (20%)
    • Functions as the main administrative point of contact for WVC corporate engagement Due Diligence (DD) function.
    • Participates in global World Vision DD processes and policy development, acts as WVC main point of contact for corporate engagement for other WV offices.
    • Active member of the WVC Corporate Engagement Working Group

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in international development, business, political science, or related field. (Masters an asset)
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Canadian “responsible business” sector or related role.
  • Experience engaging directly with companies on responsible business and/or children’s rights would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of the current discussions and best practices in Corporate Social Responsibility, responsible business, and shared value partnerships, particularly in the international development space.

  • Ability to understand, facilitate, and navigate diverse organizational considerations and objectives
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing, synthesizing, analyzing and writing
  • Excellent and winsome communication and public presentation skills, both oral and written, for internal and external audiences
  • Ability to take initiative and identify new and creative opportunities
  • Ability to work well under pressure and take a methodical, disciplined approach to work to deadlines and prioritize work effectively
  • Developing various products by deadlines
  • Ability to work within electronic file storage and sharing systems and with a variety of software applications.
  • Flexible, self-starter, sense of humour, team player, able to work without supervision
  • Ability to thrive in a cross-cultural and faith-based environment
  • Commitment to World Vision’s Vision, Mission and Values and ability to express those
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Fluent in English, French is an asset
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, use of other computer applications an asset
