Executive Director

The North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance is seeking a dynamic, experienced and highly motivated person to lead the organization's future efforts in developing and implementing solutions in watershed management.

The North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NSWA) Society is a multi-stakeholder watershed planning and improvement partnership formed in 1997, and incorporated as non-profit society in 2000. The NSWA provides a forum for sharing information and addressing issues that affect the North Saskatchewan River (NSR) watershed in Alberta. The NSWA was granted charitable status in 2016.

In 2005, the NSWA was appointed by Alberta Environment to serve as the Watershed Planning and Advisory Council (WPAC) for the North Saskatchewan River under Water for Life: Alberta’s Strategy for Sustainability (2003). The NSWA completed two major initiatives in 2012: The Integrated Watershed Management Plan for the North Saskatchewan River in Alberta (IWMP), and The Vermilion River Watershed Management Plan. Key strategic priorities for NSWA are to implement these plans by continuing to work closely with regional partners, to assist local groups in the development of new watershed plans, and to provide technical and policy advice on watershed management to various sectors and stakeholders. The NSWA has developed three municipal watershed partnerships to further guide this work: the Vermilion River Watershed Alliance; the Sturgeon River Watershed Alliance; and the Headwaters Alliance.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead a dynamic group of environmental professionals working to advance NSWA’s goals and objectives
  • Work closely with the NSWA Board of Directors and staff to develop strategic and operational priorities for the organization
  • Ensure that regional watershed partnerships, local stewardship groups, and specific NSWA committees have access to scientific, policy and economic information to support their initiatives
  • Ensure that the NSWA has adequate scientific leadership to oversee the delivery of technical programs
  • Oversee the financial management of the organization
  • Oversee the preparation of operational and technical grant applications, and other fundraising initiatives
  • Ensure all programs and projects are delivered within budget and timelines in accordance with NSWA’s Annual Operating Plan
  • Organize NSWA Society meetings, and manage all corporate reporting responsibilities
  • Oversee the promotion of the NSWA to members and the wider community through Educational Forums, stewardship events, presentations, newsletters and social media


M.Sc. (preferred) and extensive work experience in Watershed Management, Natural Sciences, Water Resources Engineering or a related environmental field. Candidates should have proven experience in fundraising initiatives and the development of collaborative partnerships with diverse stakeholder, public and NGO organizations. Strong writing, communications, organizational leadership and inter-personal skills are essential.

Salary Range: $85,000 - $110,000 commensurate with experience
