Position: Education Coordinator
Type: full-time 6 months with possibility of extension

Location: Orillia, near Barrie, Ontario

About Scales Nature Park

Scales Nature Park is a 21 hectare conservation area located just south of Orillia, Ontario. The focus of this facility is the conservation of reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and the habitats that these animals require.

Duration: 6 months, with potential for extension depending on funding. Flexible start date.

Eligibility: To be eligible for funding, candidates must be between the ages of 15-30.

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and conducting on-site and outreach education programs for Scales Nature Park and our project partners. Duties may include:

  • perform outreach and on-site educational programs about reptiles, amphibians, fish, and other topics, to a variety of audiences at venues such as schools, libraries, parks, malls, etc.
  • speaking to the public, answering questions, and supervising the handling of animals
  • schedule and price events using online tools and paper forms, invoice and track payments
  • communicate with clients by phone, email and social media to determine the best program options to suit their needs and budget
  • co-ordinate vehicles, animals, equipment, staff and volunteers required to deliver events
  • assist with animal care, maintenance or field work as required
  • create social media posts related to educational programming and events

Compensation: $14 per hour, based on a 40 hour week, 26 week position with possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability.


  • strong presentation and other oral communication skills
  • ability to stay organized while multi-tasking in a busy environment
  • knowledgeable about herpetology and conservation
  • positive attitude and willingness to help people get over their fears are essential
  • flexibility regarding scheduling is important
  • internal motivation and the ability to work without supervision
  • valid class G license, and good driving record
  • familiarity with MS Office and Google Suite, including Google Calendar, Sheets, etc.
  • familiarity with social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team
