About the Role:

The Lead, Indigenous Engagement & Outreach, plays a critical role as part of a broader partnerships and stakeholder relations team supporting Evergreen’s work. They will enhance and build relationships among Indigenous leaders and community-members, Evergreen and its partners, Municipalities, and the community at large. The Lead will be responsible for the process of building culturally respectful, collaborative and effective relationships in support of the development and rollout of advisory and capacity-building services to Indigenous communities nation-wide, as they explore and implement new approaches to improve the lives of residents through data and connected technology, housing innovation, land-based and cultural placekeeping, and other means.

The Lead represents Evergreen externally, develops new partnerships while strengthening existing ones, and builds Evergreen’s understanding of Indigenous worldviews and community needs. By holding and activating a broad network of partners and collaborators across the country, the Lead also contributes to the advancement of program activities that serve and engage Indigenous communities and practitioners, champion Indigenous inclusion and leadership, and help Evergreen continue its Reconciliation journey.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and steward relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations across Canada to enable Indigenous peoples’ participation in Evergreen’s capacity-building and support programs.
  • Coordinate outreach and engagement to support the process of Indigenous communities needs assessment, Indigenous communities’ participation in select areas of program design and to ensure Indigenous representation and perspectives are included in Evergreen’s programs.
  • Participate in Municipal outreach and engagement in support of a range of Evergreen’s programs.
  • Work collaboratively with the Programming and Communications teams to ensure program activities and communication materials are inclusive of and reflect Indigenous values, traditional protocols, culture and process expectations.
  • Contribute to and support program development and implementation, bringing the lens of Indigenous priorities and engagement, and acting as an advisor on such matters internally.
  • Support the outreach and process required for securing Indigenous representation on programs’ advisory bodies
  • Active participation in the Indigenous Inclusion Working Group at Evergreen, a staff-led committee working across the organization to advance Evergreen’s progress through the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business’ Progressive Aboriginal Relations certification; systemic inclusion of Indigenous culture and leadership, and community engagement.

About You:

You excel in the following areas:

  • Community Engagement and Relationship-building. Ability to engage with Indigenous community and organizational leaders in a holistic, inclusive and meaningful way. Outreach, relationship-building and collaboration should focus on creating reciprocal value and relevant opportunities for Indigenous partners.
  • Evidence-Based Decision Making/Problem Solving skills. Draw insightful conclusions from information. Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the project.
  • Agile Management: Comfortable in an unpredictable environment, able to effectively manage through iterative program design and delivery
  • Program Design/Learning: Comfortable working through systematic problem solving, experimentation and learning from experience
  • Analytical/Decision Making/Problem Solving skills: Draw insightful conclusions from information. Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and effective

You have the following qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in not-for-profit, government, or academic environment
  • Proven experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations and leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively build, steward and grow relationships, negotiate partnerships and/or manage collaborative initiatives with a broad range of Indigenous actors
  • Community outreach experience with Indigenous communities and organizations
  • Strong understanding of systemic issues faced by Indigenous communities including colonialism, reconciliation, inclusion, equity and social justice issues and trends, especially in an urban context
  • Knowledge of diverse Indigenous communities, cultures and areas of expertise
  • Pan-Canadian experience with a wide range of Indigenous communities (an asset)
  • Experience working in or with Canadian Municipalities (an asset)

  • Supervised by Executive Director, Strategic Initiatives

Working Conditions:

  • Position is based out of Evergreen’s head office at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto
  • Office or Home Office environment with on the ground presence as required
  • Regular office hours (flexible), with some onsite and offsite evenings and/or weekends required
