Position: Indigenous Education Coordinator

Job Description:

Willowgrove is looking to hire an Indigenous Education Coordinator to work alongside our organization to build relationships with Indigenous folks so that we may better incorporate Indigenous teachings and voices into our programming.

Our 100-acre property (located in Stouffville, Ontario) includes greenbelt land, an apple orchard, a creek and pond, an old growth forest, livestock, and wildlife, and since 1968, we have used this land to offer camping programs, events, education, and recreation opportunities for children and families. By offering these services in an outdoor setting, we hope to nurture the social, emotional, spiritual, and physical growth of our community.

Position Background:

In line with TRC’s calls to action, we are hoping to use our programming and audience to help educate our community, and build relationships with local first nation communities. We aim to be better allies, and are dedicated to creating workshops and educational opportunities at Willowgrove that showcase and elevate Indigenous voices. We recognize that our work in reconciliation requires relationship building. We want to listen to the needs of our closest Indigenous neighbours: the Mississaugas of Scugog Island, Chippewas of Georgina Island, Chippewas of Rama, Mississaugas of Hiawatha, Mississaugas of Alderville, Mississaugas of Curve Lake, and Chippewas of Beausoleil so that together we may figure out programming opportunities that serve both our communities well.


The Indigenous Education Coordinator will be responsible for the following:

Networking with Indigenous Communities and Organizations:

  • Building relationships and making connections for collaborations between Settler and Indigenous communities and organizations
  • Exploring mutually beneficial community partnerships for on-site programming
  • Providing organizational consultation and acting as an advisor on TRC goals

Infusing Indigenous teachings into Willowgrove programs:

  • Communicating between programs and meeting with program heads
  • Reviewing current curriculums and lessons, as well as develop new programs/exploring additional programming opportunities
  • Contributing to social media posts in order to increase our online education

Coordinating Indigenous Learning:

  • Planning and organizing workshops, events, as well as KAIROS Blanket Exercise programs
  • Scheduling staff, volunteers and facilitators, and provide administrative support
  • Overseeing program marketing, inquiries and bookings

The Indigenous Education Coordinator will have the following skills, knowledge or abilities:

  • Preference will be given to a person who self-identifies as an Indigenous person of North America
  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline
  • Experience and knowledge engaging Indigenous communities is preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to build relationships, strong communication skills, interpersonal and cross-cultural effectiveness skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented, resourceful, flexible and able to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Ability to plan, implement and prioritize tasks, optimize resources, and work with others to accomplish goals or priorities
  • Proficient with MS Office Word and Excel.
