Hiring: Herbal Farm and Farmstay Assistant
Employer: Hearts Content Organic Farm

Location: near Brantford & Hamilton, Ontario
Housing: Optional on-site accom.

Dates: 10 week full time asap until mid-December/flexible, to be discussed;
Eligibility: 18 - 30 years old; must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Do you have a willingness to learn about or experience with making healthy products from organic dried herbs? Are you interested in making salves and lip balms and assisting with marketing them? Would you like to participate in small scale construction projects, and help with ecotourism and farmstay? Please indicate and talk about this in your cover letter.

We operate Hearts Content Organic Farm with the Trans-Canada Rail Trail passing through the middle of our farm. Richard is a retired naturopathic doctor focusing on the cultivation of herbs, medicinal and edible plant walks and the preparation of lip balms, salves, and dried herbs. We focus on rescuing and redistributing organic food, conservation projects (wetlands, tree planting and tree care) and protecting farmland in our community. We host eco-farmstay (camping, glamping, and wheelchair accessible suites). We also care for the Langford Schoolhouse, a rural community hub. We work to create a welcoming community for migrant farm workers (food drops and sourcing bikes for migrant farm workers).

We are seeking an energetic, flexible assistant who is eager to work with us.

Job Description:

Helping with...

  • organic farming harvesting, drying and storage of herbs, fruit, berries & nuts
  • harvesting and drying herbs, preparing value added herb & food products (salves, lip balms, dried herbs)
  • care of organic chickens
  • Eco-agri-tourism – preparing, cleaning, and hosting farmstay units and events such as birding, bike tours and plant walks
  • some small-scale construction/renovation
  • care of the grounds
  • sorting rescued food for distribution in the community, working with compost
  • conservation related work (tree planting and tree care, pruning, dealing with invasive species, planting pollinator species)
  • outreach to migrant farm workers and temporary foreign workers
  • social media

Experience with herbs, and tree and berry care is desired but not necessary.

We are seeking someone who is committed to being a team player, and is highly motivated to learning and developing skills related to growing and processing herbs.

  • This is a physically demanding job, and requires a level of physical fitness. You'll be working outdoors, getting in shape and working with a great team.
  • Term: October to mid-December
  • Eligibility: Must be between 18 & 30 years old.
  • Pay: $20/hour, 40 hours/week
  • Benefits: organic fruit, vegetables & eggs, discount on herbal products, vacation pay
  • Schedule: flexible 8-hour day shift, Monday to Friday, occasional weekends, evenings
  • Assets: Spanish is strongly recommended, Patois, driver’s license

Ability to commute or relocate before starting work (required).
