Purpose of Position

This position is ideally suited to someone enrolled in a horticulture program or individuals seeking some hands-on work experience. The work experience would be valuable to someone who is interested in a career in parks horticulture, public and botanical gardens, or residential garden maintenance. As Groundsperson you will work under the direction of the Grounds Manager in the care, maintenance, and development of the gardens and grounds associated with the historic estate, Casa Loma. In addition to the outdoor gardening work, you will be required to help maintain plants in the greenhouse, potting shed, and cold frames, as well as plant displays in the Conservatory.

Primary Activities

• Planting, watering, and weeding of flower and shrub beds.
• Cutting and trimming of turf areas.
• Assist with the pruning of trees and shrubs.
• Operate a wide range of power equipment such as garden tractors, leaf blowers, roto-tillers, and gas line trimmers.
• Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of fountains and water gardens.
• Litter control in outdoor areas.
• Respond to questions from the public in a knowledgeable and courteous manner.
• Participate in garden tours and demonstrations when required.
• Perform snow removal duties when on duty in winter months.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by Manager of Grounds.

Skills/Knowledge Required

• Preference given to students enrolled in a horticulture program or individuals with horticulture experience. However, anyone interested in working outdoors in a garden setting are encouraged to apply.
• Some outdoor work experience preferred, and in the operation of power equipment.
• Must be physically able to work outside in all weather conditions and do a considerable amount of physically demanding tasks such as heaving lifting and bending. Must be tolerant of temperature extremes.
