Position: Green Event Crew Members
Employer: Green Event Services
Location: Calgary, Alberta

Start Date: June 1, 2017

Completion Date: September 30, 2017

Time Commitment: 30 hours/week

Compensation: 15-18$/hr; depending on experience and level of responsibility

Position Scope of Work:

Green Event Crew Members work as part of a team to set up recycling stations, keep designated event spaces clean, transport collected waste material, and sort all collected material at events. This job will provide great opportunities to gain work experience, educate people about waste reduction, and have a positive impact on our environment and communities.

Crew Members are expected to manage waste in a safe and professional way. Working at large festivals and events is rewarding but physically demanding and requires that Crew Members be adaptable to quick changes and follow instructions well. Crew Members are hardworking, strong team players. The amount of scheduled work varies week to week depending on our event schedule, so flexibility is key.

Must have an appreciation for our mission to reduce and divert waste from the landfill and be open to consistent learning about implementing these strategies in support of zero waste communities.

On-site Event Duties:

  • Promptly arrive on-site at specified date and time
  • Set up recycling stations and other equipment (including signage and other supplies) throughout event sites as instructed by Area Managers and Event Leaders
  • Change and replace full compost, recycling and garbage bags at recycling stations
  • Transport all collected waste material to designated drop-off locations throughout the event site
  • Pick up litter and micro waste throughout event site to maintain a high level of cleanliness at all times
  • Sort through collected material for contamination and continually ensure safety and cleanliness of sorting station
  • Weigh material and record data on tracking sheet
  • Troubleshoot event issues and relay information back to Area Manager or Event Leader
  • Teamwork and close collaboration with other Crew Members
  • Educate event patrons about waste diversion, waste reduction and the move towards zero waste
  • Follow Health & Safety Procedures as outlined by Green Event Services
  • Champion Green Event Services Vision, Mission, and Values

Requirements

  • Must have a mode of transportation to get to the office and various event sites throughout Calgary (whether its two or four wheeled)
  • Experience working as part of a team

Not Required but considered an asset:

  • Safety and First Aid training
  • Leadership and communication skills and experience
  • Experience working with large events and festivals
  • Experience working with waste, recycling and compost
  • Class 5 driver’s license and a clean driving record

Position Expectations

Usual working conditions involve:

  • Work Outdoors
  • Work within large crowds of people
  • Work in an environment with a high noise volume
  • Up to 12 hour shifts
  • Weekend and evening shifts
  • Standing or walking for long periods of time
  • Lifting up to 24 kg

Other Position Notes:

  • One-month probationary period
  • Monthly performance reviews for benefit of both the employee and employer
  • Paid training to be completed two weeks from start date:
    • Green Event Services Orientation
    • Basic Training
    • Health & Safety Training
