Scales Nature Park is a 21 hectare conservation area located just south of Orillia, Ontario. The focus of this facility is the conservation of reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and the habitats that these animals require.
Duties will include:
manipulation of data and creation of maps, models, or tools related to wildlife conservation using geographic information systems (GIS) applications to serve a variety of purposes, such as identifying habitats, movement corridors, species range occupancy, threat locations, and other patterns
obtaining shape files and other data from partner organizations and government agencies
development of predictive models and other tools
participation in data collation and analyses
working with senior staff to identify opportunities to use GIS technology to improve conservation efforts
participation in field work or other facility operations as time allows to better understand project needs
Duration: Six month to one year internship, depending on funding
Salary: Based on $16 per hour, 40 hours per week
Work with mapping APIs (Mapbox, Leaflet, etc.), Python scripting experience is an asset
Use model builder to manipulate or create spatial analysis models in ArcGIS
Previous experience collecting, organizing and analyzing geospatial and scientific data
Proven time management and skills, ability to stay organized, task switch and prioritize conflicting goals
Internal motivation and the ability to work without supervision
Positive attitude and commitment to conservation
Ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations with a positive attitude
