Your Connection to Wildlife — As one of Canada’s largest not for profit leaders in wildlife conservation, research, and advocacy, we are seeking to fill the following position. 

Job Title: Geospatial Data Manager (1.5-year term) 
Reporting to: Senior Conservation Biologist – Freshwater Ecology
Organization: Canadian Wildlife Federation

 This position may be based in our Kanata, Ontario head office, or in British Columbia

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Data Manager will acquire, develop, and manage a series of large spatial datasets of barriers to aquatic connectivity to support project selection and implementation for fish passage improvement in British Columbia. They will work with project partners to maintain existing geospatial databases, compile new datasets, ensure a high quality of data is maintained, perform basic geospatial analyses, and support the Geospatial Analyst and other team members as necessary.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Manage, update, and query existing geospatial databases
  2. Design, populate, and manage new relational databases
  3. Coordinate with project partners to ensure data management and spatial analysis needs are being met to support project implementation
  4. Perform QA/QC of barrier data and other datasets to ensure consistency and quality of data
  5. Design or update datasets and databases to ensure the necessary data fields and attributes are present to perform prioritization analyses
  6. Undertake basic geospatial analysis, including aligning barrier point data with hydrologic dendritic networks to ensure topological coincidence
  7. Execute Python and SQL scripts to query data
  8. Contribute technical expertise to fish passage improvement planning and prioritization exercises to identify priority barriers for removal/remediation

QUALIFICATIONS

Necessary

  1. Requires minimum Bachelor’s degree with relevant work experience in related fields (Biology, Environmental Science or Studies, Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology).
  2. Experience managing large-scale datasets (GIS, database management.
  3. Knowledge of relational database management systems (RDBMS), including executing Structured Query Language (SQL) scripts.
  4. Experience performing basic spatial analyses with Geographic Information Systems (e.g., ArcGIS suite or similar software), including raster and vector datasets.
  5. Experience producing high-quality maps.
  6. Strong English written and oral communication skills.

Additional Assets

  1. Demonstrated expertise working with hydrological, biological, topographic, and land use spatial datasets.
  2. 2-5 years work experience managing ecological spatial datasets
  3. Experience with Oracle and PostgreSQL DBMS.
  4. Experience writing SQL scripts for database management and data extraction.
  5. Experience writing and executing code and scripts for data manipulation and spatial analysis in Python or other programming platforms.
  6. Experience producing high-quality map products, for print and web.
  7. Conservation planning or freshwater ecology experience.
  8. Experience coding in R for data manipulation and statistical analysis.
