LOCAL, ORGANIC, SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Hiring: School Garden Grower Educators
Organization: Growing Young Farmers Society
Location: North Saanich, Central Saanich & Sidney, Greater Victoria BC

Growing Young Farmers Society (GYFS) is a non-profit that builds and staffs school gardens in and around Victoria BC. Our program emphasizes the importance of local, organic, sustainable food sources and teaches children and youth how to grow healthy produce — encouraging them to share their knowledge with their families and community.

We are currently looking for Grower Educators for the 2022-2023 School Year. We are looking for someone who loves to work with kids, has a passion and a knowledge of gardening, and who can commit to teaching during the upcoming fall school garden session that run from Late September-November. Following this time, the job can continue in the spring running from March-June. The job pays $20 an hour and is perfect for someone who is available to work once or twice a week, on contract. This is also a great opportunity for the applicant to see what our organization is about — with the potential for more opportunities through our summer camps, other school gardens, and as a member of the GYFS Board.

We are currently hiring for the following School Programs

1) North Saanich Middle School (at Sandown Center for Regenerative Agriculture)
5) Keating Elementary (Central Saanich)
6) Deep Cove Elementary (Sidney)

Job Requirements

  • The applicant will need to pass a criminal record check.
  • Preference will be given to individuals that have a history of supervising and working with children.
  • Knowledge of gardening and/or farming practices is a must.
  • Many of our schools offer French Immersion. Applicants who can speak French are encourgaged to apply but this is not a requirement for the job.

This work is very independent. Most Grower Educators spend 1 day per week teaching 5-6 classes outside with the support of the classroom teacher (~7 hrs/day). Educators also work closely with a "Champion Teacher" who helps to gather supplies for the garden, fundraise, and communicate with the school and parents about the program.

Upon hire, applicants will be invited to attend a group training session -with fellow Grower Educators where they will be given example lesson plans and specific training on how to teach at, and run a school garden program.

To Apply:
