Position: Experienced gardener

Is a boutique eco-friendly garden design, install & maintain business, operating mainly in the west end of Toronto. Growing each year since 2007 through word-of-mouth only, relationships with clients & with team members are a critical component of our success. New and rejuvenated gardens in our care intentionally include native and drought tolerant plants with a conscious effort to select pollinator-friendly options. Gardening is done in small teams mainly with hand tools (never with gas-powered machines), as we enjoy the sound of birds chirping around us as we work!

Experienced gardener position

Working in teams of 2 to 5 crew members, the successful applicant will:

  • possess indepth knowledge of gardening based on hands-on experience in either their own or client gardens
  • take great satisfaction in creating and maintaining beautiful gardens
  • pay attention both to small details and the big picture
  • have a positive, 'can do' attitude toward work
  • enjoy spending time outdoors / in nature
  • ideally, be able to share their knowledge and teach co-workers essential gardening skills
  • interact with clients & colleagues politely & professionally

Hours are somewhat flexible and suitable for those who are caring for young children or aging parents. Car pooling is an option.

Duties include:

  • Assisting in the installation of new gardens
  • Rejuvenating existing mature gardens
  • Creating seasonal pots and displays
  • Maintenance in existing gardens (including weeding, mulching, amending soil and edging beds)
  • Removing grass, edging and amending soil for new gardens
  • Hand pruning shrubs and small trees
  • Pole pruning medium sized trees & shrubs
  • Planting bulbs, annuals, perennials, shrubs & small trees
  • Minimal general lawn care (cutting, trimming, re-grading, over-seeding)
  • Working with rocks - laying informal flagstone pathways, installing mid-sized rockery in gardens, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Have extensive knowledge of gardening principles & materials
  • Able to weed, prune and otherwise care for gardens with minimal direction and supervision
  • Able to perform physical labour
  • Able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Ideally, able to train others in pruning, weeding, laying stones, etc.


  • Must provide own ‘safe’ footwear and gardening gloves
  • May use own hand equipment if preferred; otherwise, hand tools provided
  • The use of a vehicle would be an asset but is not a requirement


  • Monday to Friday, variable, generally within 8:30 – 4:30
  • April to November, as weather permits
  • Competitive pay rates
