Position: HORTICULTURIST AND GROWING DOME CARETAKER

HORTICULTURIST AND GROWING DOME CARETAKER

The School Horticulturalist will play a key role in ensuring nutritional and sustainable food availability for Shawnigan Lake School students and staff. At Shawnigan, we employ not only individuals who are experts in their area of study, but who also bring a passion for learning and a love of working with youth. The Horticulturalist will bring a scientific approach to the responsibilities of crop growth, harvesting, and distribution of crops, as well as an effective and efficient management for the School’s growing facilities, including the Growing Dome, and their connection to the educational program of the School.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the duties of a Horticulturalist include but are not limited to the following:

  • In consultation with the Director of Food Services, responsible for weekly pruning, watering, weeding, harvesting and planting
  • Implement, utilize, and refine planting guidelines regarding soil depth and composition, germination time, and moisture levels to ensure that the majority of seeds and cuttings grow fully into plants
  • Ensure that plants receive correct levels of nutrients, and are planted and maintained following best practices
  • Ensure that the Growing Dome has appropriate levels of soil, fertilizer, and pesticide on hand by conducting regular inventory counts and helping to prepare supply orders
  • Trim plants to encourage healthy growth and remove diseased or unwanted shoots and leaves
  • Safe, effective, and efficient management of the School’s growing facilities, including the Growing Dome, to provide maximum value
  • Reporting any deficiencies and arranging for prompt resolution
  • Welcoming and educating students and teachers in the Growing Dome and other growing facilities regarding the School’s farm to table program

REQUIREMENTS

  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • A bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or Food Science is preferred
  • Valid BC Teaching certificate (an asset)
  • Previous experience working with youth ( highly desirable)
  • Previous working experience in a greenhouse
  • Excellent botanical knowledge
  • Knowledge of basic tools, machinery
  • Good computer and recordkeeping skills
  • Possess a valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Interest in organic agriculture, food science, and passionate about sustainable and local food systems.
  • Keen to share knowledge, collaborate with teachers, and educate youth in farm to table practices
