GARDENER & HORTICULTURE JOBS

Positions: Expert Gardener
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Casual
Company: Blooming City
Location: Downtown Toronto, Ontario

We are seeking personable, honest, reliable, hard-working and experienced horticultural technicians/gardeners to provide gardening expertise as part of our gardening team. You will work with others to perform garden cleanup, planting, pruning, fertilizing, weeding, with some lawn care and plant-care problem-solving. Salary is dependent on knowledge and experience. If you are interested now or potentially in the future, please be in touch right away.

We are a small bespoke gardening corporation with a mostly downtown Toronto client roster of exclusively residential clients (mostly gardens, some terraces). We have been operating since 2002 and work with clients who are keen and passionate about their gardens. We value an exceptional, respectful work ethic, relationships, growth (of gardens and people), taking responsibility, and feedback as a tool for achieving excellence. We pride ourselves in an unusually supportive and flexible work environment that is focused on providing our clients with satisfaction and you with fulfilling work.

In addition to a keen enthusiasm for gardening, the ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, efficient professional gardening habits, some supervisory experience, extensive plant and pest knowledge, and at least three years of professional gardening experience. However, we work as a team, and some of our current staff have a great deal of professional landscaping and supervisory experience. The fundamental skill we are seeking is strong knowledge of gardening and plants, and their proper care.

  • Formal horticultural training preferred, red-seal completed or in progress (we can sign-off on hours) is ideal, but past gardening experience of any kind is valued.
  • 95% of work happens in Toronto, south of the 401 between the DVP and High Park. We have two hubs, one near Allen Gardens and the second at Lansdowne and Dupont. This is not a job for someone commuting from the wider GTA.
  • You will sometimes work alone and sometimes work as part of a team, outside, with distancing guidelines and hygiene practises in place.
  • We have both full- and part-time opportunities available. Please indicate which you are interested in, including the number of hours of work you are seeking per week.

To apply, please have a look at six images to be found here: http://bloomingcity.com/quiz.jpg. When you apply please do so with your best guess of the plants in the images. If you do not know please say so. Also, please submit a résumé and/or a cover letter that show the strengths you bring to the position and lets us know how many hours work you are seeking per week. Please email your application to gardens@bloomingcity.com

While you are free to seek help on the quiz, your plant knowledge will be tested on the spot in an interview so it will save us both time if you simply answer the quiz based on what you know or don't know. We may still wish to interview candidates who do not have strong plant knowledge but who do have professional gardening experience. However, we are really seeking someone who can be an expert resource for our team.

COVID-19 considerations: 99% of your hours will be outside and you will rarely work with more one other person. You will almost always be able to maintain physical distancing and masks are provided and expected when you cannot maintain distancing.

We are committed to hiring candidates representative of the diversity of Toronto.

We will reply to all candidates who complete the quiz. We do a rolling hiring process so we may contact any applicant at some future point to see if you are still interested.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Casual

Salary: $18.00 (for less-knowledgeable candidates with some professional gardening experience) to negotiable.
