Position: Garden and Garden Coordinator
Organization: Riverdale Hub / Social Gardener Café 
Location: Greenwood & Gerrard, East End Toronto, Ontario

Riverdale Hub is a social enterprise in Toronto’s East End that houses the Social Gardener Café, Riverdale Gallery, co-working and event spaces, and a rooftop garden. The Social Gardener Café is focused on providing our customers with affordable vegan and gluten-free meals whether they are just stopping in for a coffee or planning a large catered event. Position Summary:

The Café and Garden Coordinator not only shares our values, but is creative, versatile, and passionate about sustainability, organic gardening, food security and their community. The position will require the incumbent to assist with the daily operations of the café and pop-up market as well as tend to the rooftop organic vegetable garden and rain water garden.

We also host a program called Women in the Garden (WIG) for women to learn about gardening twice a week. This position would require collaboration with the WIG Program Coordinator to plan workshops and garden themed activities in the community garden.

Key Roles/Responsibilities:

Social Gardener Café:

  • Support the Café Manager in preparing and serving menu orders (e.g., vegan wraps, salads, baked goods, hot beverages and smoothies) and processing payments.
  • Assist with menu creation and updates.
  • Coordinate with the Café Manager to document food wastage.
  • Assist Café Manager with the supervision of students.
  • Ensure all safe food handling standards and procedures are followed.
  • Ensure stock levels are maintained and properly organized, following inventory control best practices.

Pop-Up Market:

  • Support the Café Manager in preparing specialty grocery items for the pop-up market (e.g., organic pesto, kimchee, pickled carrots and cucumbers, hot sauce, popsicles, and vegan desserts).
  • Support the Food Service Innovator in managing the pop-up market through set-up, sales, and payment processing.
  • Harvest, dehydrate (as needed), and package fresh produce from the rooftop garden for the market.

Rooftop Garden:

  • Maintain the container gardens on the rooftop to grow seasonal vegetables, herbs and edible flowers.
  • Provide direction to community garden volunteers.
  • Create newsletter content to provide updates to the community on garden activities.
  • Support the creation of online tools that educate clients about container gardens including soil requirements, pests, plant choices, cleaning and sanitization.


  • Ensure all COVID-19 safety and disinfecting standards and procedures are followed.
  • Assist in marketing and social media activities to promote the garden, café, and pop-up market.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, move product, equipment and supplies (e.g., soil, hoses, patio furniture, etc.).
  • Ideally the candidate would hold a valid driver’s license and access to a car.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • 2+ years of café/pop-up market experience in the front and back of house
  • Experience with organic urban and community gardening
  • Graduate from a Food and Hospitality program
  • A valid Food Handler’s certificate
  • A horticulture or sustainable urban farming certificate is an asset
  • Baking and barista experience is a must
  • Familiarity with Touch Bistro POS, social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram), and food delivery apps (Ritual One, Door Dash, Uber Eats)
  • Ability to follow recipes
  • Knowledge of pickling and canning
  • Motivation to follow projects through, and bring forward new ideas to advance the garden and pop-up market
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, as well as independently
  • Flexibility and ability to work as needed in different areas of the Hub
  • Ability to manage multiple demands in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer (MS Office) skills
