Position: Garden Manager
Organization: Abbey Gardens
Location: Haliburton, Ontario

Job Description: 

The Abbey Gardens project is centered on education and the exploration of sustainability. Our garden offers tremendous opportunity for learning and experimentation. The Gardener position will provide an opportunity for learning as well as make a significant contribution to the larger vision at Abbey Gardens.

As a member of the AG team, the Gardener will be responsible for developing and implementing the plan for vegetable production; contribute to educational garden development; oversee The Growcer (hydroponic unit); collaborate on the development of the Big Pit restoration; and to assist with work on the overall property as time permits.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop annual garden plans
  • Prepare and Maintain garden beds
  • Plant, harvest, and process a variety of crops
  • Weed, water and prune vegetable crops and flower beds
  • Record garden yields
  • Assist with program garden areas
  • Coordinate with kitchen staff for harvest
  • Assist with special projects as time permits (development of the Big Pit)
  • Oversee operations of The Growcer (hydroponic unit)
  • Other tasks as requested by the staff team
  • Supervision of garden staff and volunteers

Critical Skills:

  • Experience working outdoors in physically demanding conditions (heat, precipitation)
  • Ability to work independently and within a team structure
  • Experience using garden tools and operating trimmers
  • Ability to perform physical labour
  • Willingness to learn
  • Interest in gardening and education


  • Knowledge of native plants
  • Knowledge of hydroponics
  • Knowledge of bee keeping
  • Ability to operate a tractor
  • Chainsaw license


This year we have two initiatives starting up at Abbey Gardens.

  1. The re-introduction of the Growcer will occur in May/June. This is an opportunity for training on hydroponics and the overall system.
  2. We are embarking on a research venture with a collaborative from Trent University. Part of this project is to experiment and explore growing native medicinal plants in the Big Pit area of the property. 2021 will include the preparation and planning for that area.

Salary Range: $40,000-44,000 annually

Eligible for benefits after 3 months

Full time. Potential for year round.
