Hiring: Forestry - Non-Timber Forest Products Harvesters

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The candidate is required to navigate through the forest in remote locations using a GPS, compass and maps. He or she will identify, locate and harvest medicinal mushrooms and pack out heavy loads from remote locations to drop points for pick up.

Safe handling and processing will be done using sterilized equipment eg. hand tools, grinders and mills. Daily clean-up and organization of the processing facility will be the responsibility of the candidate. He or she will also be responsible for basic data entry using GPS units, computer programs and spreadsheets.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Identify desired tree stands and mushrooms grown in these areas
• Locate, harvest and pack out Reishi, Chaga and other species of medicinal mushrooms from remote locations
• Process mushrooms using hand tools, grinders and mills
• Shop maintenance, cleaning and organizing

MINOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Basic data entry into GPS units and spreadsheets
• Read maps, compasses, and GPS coordinates
• Commute to remote locations for harvesting and processing facility in Goulais River
• Learn about the medicinal value of Chaga and which parts to discard and which to keep
• Shop, equipment upkeep; cleaning, organizing, etc

QUALIFICATION FOR THE JOB

Education

Forestry education is an asset but not required, only an interest/passion for the outdoors and a willingness to learn and work hard.

Experience

• Forestry experience
• Past experience in labour-intensive work
• Confident navigating the forest using a compass and GPS

KEY COMPETENCIES

• Love and respect for nature and our environment
• Tree and mushroom species identification
• Willingness to work alone or with a team
• Comfortable navigating the forest using a compass, map and GPS
• A valid driver's license is an asset

WAGE

Competent harvesters average $160 in an 8 hour day. This can increase or decrease depending on total weight harvested.
