Position: Assistant Fisheries Technician
Organization: Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority
Location: Port Hope, Ontario

1 Contract Position Available:

  • April to July 2020
  • Minimum 6 Hours per Weekend
  • $20.00 per hour wage

This contract position will provide an exciting opportunity for a high-energy team player with excellent communications and technical skills. The successful application will support the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority’s (GRCA) watershed monitoring programs. The Assistant Fisheries Technician is responsible for watershed monitoring data collection.

The Assistant Fisheries Technician will be responsible for conducting a variety of monitoring, data collection/management, and environmental technology installation tasks to support the GRCA’s various Watershed Services programs.

Application Criteria

  1. A valid Province of Ontario driver’s license is required, and GRCA will obtain a 3-year uncertified driver’s abstract of the successful candidate upon hiring
  2. Ability to work on weekends and holidays

Summary of Tasks

  • Install and maintain fisheries trapping devises, operation of low head barrier and fishway
  • Biologically sample various fish species, including scale samples, tissue for DNA, and tagging/marking fish
  • Keep accurate and organized records of data collected
  • Support partnership projects at sampling location
  • Maintain monitoring site by clearing vegetation, garbage, installing signage
  • Work independently

Summary of Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience with fisheries monitoring and sampling techniques
  • Identification of fish species, including cyprinids (ROM fish ID course is an asset)
  • Team player with strong organization, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Willing to work outdoors and in adverse environmental conditions
  • Must be able to work safely in accordance with the GRCA Health and Safety Policy
