Position: Fisheries/Forestry Biologist
Organization: Gwich'in Renewable Resources Board
Location: Inuvik, Northwest Territories

The Gwich’in Renewable Resources Board (GRRB) is a co-management Board located in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

The GRRB is currently seeking a motivated full-time Fisheries/Forestry Biologist. This position is responsible for management planning, research, technical advice, relationship building and consultation related to fisheries and forestry in the Gwich’in Settlement Area (GSA).

Main responsibilities:

  • Assist partners with fisheries and forestry management in the GSA, including development, review and implementation of management plans and the associated consultation;
  • Conduct fisheries and forestry research in the GSA as related to the GRRB mandate and highlighted in the GRRB’s research priorities;
  • Maintain an inventory of fisheries and forestry research in the GSA;
  • Assist in the coordination of annual fisheries and forestry research priorities;
  • Provide fisheries and forestry related technical advice to the Board, co-management partners, and government agencies in the GSA;
  • Provide fisheries and forestry related management information and staff summary at bi-annual Board meetings;
  • Develop fisheries and forestry related communication material as needed;
  • Consult with Renewable Resources Councils, government and co-management partners on fisheries and forestry management programs and research projects in the GSA; and
  • Provide plain language summaries of GRRB fisheries and forestry research to RRCs and the public.

Requirements (Applicants MUST demonstrate they meet the following):

  • Minimum of a Bachelor degree in Biology or related science field;
  • Work experience in the fisheries and/or forestry field;
  • Ability to conduct remote field work; and
  • Class 5 Driver’s license, standard first aid and successful criminal records check by the first day of employment

Assets (Preference will be given to applicants that meet the following):

  • Knowledge of the GRRB mandate and the role of co-management in the North;
  • Sound understanding of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement;
  • Sound understanding of relevant legislation relating to fisheries and forestry in the NWT, including the Fisheries Act, NWT Forestry Management Act and associated regulations;
  • Knowledge of management plans relating to fisheries and forestry in the Gwich’in Settlement Area (GSA);
  • Experience in fisheries and forestry research design, methodology and management plan development;
  • Experience in remote field work, comfortable flying in helicopters and/or small aircrafts, and operating boats;
  • Experience working in the north and with northern aboriginal communities, particularly in GSA communities;
  • Strong communication, time management and organization skills;
  • Experience with financial planning including preparation of funding proposals and managing budgets;
  • Supervisory experience of field staff;
  • Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL), Advanced Wilderness First Aid, Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) or willingness to obtain these within the first 6 months of employment; and
  • Priority will be given to qualified Participants of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement and residents of the Northwest Territories

Starting Salary: $85,500.00 per year

Benefits: Northern Allowance ($15,278.90), relocation package, RRSP’s, and health and benefits coverage
