Position: Marine Manager

Nuxalk Fisheries Manager

Salary range $50,000 to $60,000

JOB SUMMARY: This is a two-year term position reporting to the Nuxalk Stewardship Director with potential of extension.

Nuxalk Stewardship represents a wide variety of initiatives and projects including marine planning and operations with the goal of ensuring long-term sustainability.  Nuxalk’s water, land, air, and plant and animal life are the most diverse in all of Canada, including valuable economic and social benefits.

The Marine Manager coordinates Central Coast First Nations technical activities related to fisheries, ocean protection and shipping response, Nuxalk marine stewardship, habitat restoration, compliance and monitoring by implementing Nuxalk governance over Nuxalk territory.


  • Inform Nuxalk hereditary or Stataltmc, Chief & Council, and Marine Use Committee through meetings, correspondence, briefing notes, and interpretation of technical reports or advice
  • Coordination of Coastal First Nation and Canadian Fish Reconciliation and BC Marine Planning initiatives. Implementing Nuxalk governance, in managing fisheries, ocean protection and shipping response, Nuxalk marine stewardship, marine environmental monitoring, fish habitat restoration, and emergency readiness
  • Project management of marine agreements and work plans
  • Update Nuxalk and Coastal First Nation Marine Use Plans
  • Assist development of funding applications for submission to support internal capacity
  • Participation in internal and external consultation processes with Coastal FN, BC, Canada, corporate interests and other stakeholders related to proposed coastal and marine development projects
  • Participation in negotiation of fisheries and marine resources management related protocol agreements with other Coastal First Nations, Great Bear Fisheries and Nuxalk corporations, and fish industry as required
  • Manage and expand policies of Nuxalk Commercial Fisheries licenses and fees
  • Ensure interdepartmental safety over marine operations and equipment maintenance
  • To positively reflect Nuxalk positions and interests in all related activities
  • Commitment to capacity building as a method of continually expanding job opportunities for qualified Nuxalk citizens to participate in marine management activities
  • Other related duties as may be required from time to time

EDUCATION, Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental sciences or a related field, and 3 to 5 years’ direct experience in related marine management, natural resource, environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Human resource experience in recruiting, performance management, coaching preferred
  • Technical knowledge of marine science or environmental monitoring methods, stock assessment methods, and related data management is an asset
  • Marine vessel operation proficiency is an asset
  • Working knowledge of Aboriginal community fisheries and marine resources management issues
  • Knowledge of fisheries related legislation and management processes
  • Knowledge of environmental impact assessment legislation and processes
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Project development and management experience
  • Budget development and administration
  • Working familiarity with Microsoft Office: Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook
  • Knowledge of Nuxalk or Pacific coast Aboriginal cultures


  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence
  • Satisfactory criminal record check
  • Ability to work flexible hours and to travel
  • Be willing to live in remote and pristine location of Bella Coola
