Position: Summer Farmer / Apprentice
Terms: to be discussed / MOU / stipend
Farm: Swallow Haven Farms
Location: Pelee Island, Ontario
Housing: tiny home (see below)

Swallow Haven Farms is looking for an individual or couple to assist in transitioning a farm on Pelee to become fully functional in 2020.

Pelee Island is the largest island in Lake Erie and the southernmost populated point in Canada. This means it has the most heat units in Canada and longest falls!

This opportunity to assist and learn seed production for Hawthorn Farm Organic Seeds. as well as produce for local markets and growing island-native Carolinian trees, shrubs and wildflowers for restoration and landscape projects. While learning to grow seed, you will also tend to a small market garden, upkeep the property, and can experiment with your own plot of land.

Additional land available for additional production according to interests of applicant(s). I'm open to artists, musicians, philosophers with some experience such as basic gardening skills, and of course any farmers please contact.

The team you will be working with is:

  • John Ambrose: owner and operate of Swallow Haven Farms 10+ years
  • Connor Ivany: Farmer at Everdale growing out seed on Pelee in 2019 and working on 2020 expansion.

The arrangement can be worked out, such as an MOU. I'm looking for people who will give the island community a trial and perhaps want to stay, and I can help in that transition also.

There is a tiny home (under 100sq/ft) being renovated where the applicant can live, equipped with an outdoor kitchen.

A monthly/weekly stipend can be discussed for 25hrs/week of work, as well as a percentage of market and farm gate sales that you will be running on your own. Of course more experience will bring higher stipend and percentages.

Looking to start June 1 - Oct 1, or any months in between.

There are other employment opportunities at restaurants and bars if you are proactive about it on Pelee Island. If you are interested about camping on Pelee just for acouple days while learning to farm, please contact as well.
