Hiring: Farm Manager
Farm: Andrews Farm Market & Winery
Location: Milton, Greater Toronto Area, Ontario

Established 1980, Andrews Farm Market & Winery is one of Ontario’s most well-known agri-tourism destinations, attracting 50,000+ visitors annually. We grow 160 acres of pick-your-own fruit, vegetables, and flowers; other attractions include our on-farm retail store and winery, wagon rides and playground, private event space, special farm events, and educational tour program.

Job Description & Objectives

The Farm Manager works together closely with the Operations Manager to lead, oversee and coordinate crop production and wine making activities, as well as grounds maintenance and pick-your-own (PYO) operations at Andrews Farm. This role directly supports our farm’s goals of growing the best quality, most delicious food; improving the sustainability of farming practices; creating a space of beauty for our community to connect with food, farming and nature; and ensuring positive and memorable experiences for all visitors to the farm.

Working Schedule
May 1 – October 31: Full-Time, 40 hours/week, including some weekends and holidays, with possibility of extension for part-time winter work

Working Environment
Outdoors, farm fields, winery manufacturing area, occasionally office and store

Pay Rate
$25-30/hour, based on experience

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

1. Crop Production & Groundskeeping

  • Assisting the Operations Manager and the field crew in planning and managing cropping systems (berry crops, orchard, pumpkins, sweet corn, flowers, etc.)
  • Supporting day-to-day field and outdoor operations, developing work plans and supervising staff for the PYO, wagon rides, groundskeeping and field work
  • Assessing crop picking conditions daily and ensuring that produce is supplied for the farm store, winery, orders and events

2. Wine Production & Inventory Control

  • Leading wine production, lab testing, bottling, and record keeping; ordering winemaking supplies

3. New Projects – depending on time availability & interest

  • Composting program, vegetable teaching garden, new crop variety trials, mushroom production, free-range poultry production, greenhouse set up, etc.

Job Qualifications

Education

  • College or university degree in Agriculture or related field, and/or 3-5 years hands-on work experience on a farm
  • Smart Serve certification and over 18 years of age
  • Driver’s licence

Skills

  • Enthusiasm for local food and farming
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; Spanish language skills an asset
  • Excellent customer service and people skills
  • Time management and organization, reliability
  • Able to work independently and as a team
  • Experience in staff training and supervision
  • Farming and farm management experience
  • Winemaking experience an asset, training provided
  • Some experience with tractors and farm equipment

Physical Environment

  • Some heavy lifting
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
  • Prolonged periods of standing
