REGENERATIVE FARMING

Against the Grain Farms is a regenerative farm in North Dundas County, Ontario. Our 250 acre farm includes 2 acres of intensively planted gardens for vegetable, fruit, flower production and seed saving. The farm also produces heritage grain and corn which is sold to local chefs, restaurants and CSA grain shares through local markets and on-site warehouse. We produce unique grains/flours and mixes and mexican corn products from our heritage variety of grains along with extensive field trials on re-establishment of seed stock for ancient grains, corn and dried beans. Our farm lifestyle is producdtive, organized and respecful of all that are a part of our team.

Mountain, Ontario is 1 hour drive from Ottawa, 5 minutes bike ride to Winchester a small but bustling rural community. 30 minutes to the St.Lawrence which offers excellent boating, skiiing and provincial parks. Hiking and nature on the country lanes are easily accecable from the farm.

Tasks:

Interns wll participate in all aspects of the organic vegetable and flower garden from seed to harvest along with all grain trials and field trials in conjunction with our University studies on soil ammendments.

Included in job description:

• bed prep for spring planting
• establishment and upkeep of planting/weeding crops
• vegetable harvest
• flower harvest
• seed selection:
• data collection of field trials for heritage grains
• hand harvesting of heritage grain plots

Dates:

Position starts late April until late October. 4-6 hours daily Monday-Friday.

Wage and Benefits:

• stipend including room and board and possibility of a bonus at season’s end
• work Monday to Friday 25-30 hour weeks depending on the month with a 1hr lunch break
• One week pre-arranged vacation during the season
• Free access to surplus vegetables and a stocked pantry of staples
