Position: Family farm employment
Start Date: October 2017
Type: part-time winter / full-time summer position with accommodation available, more (see below)
Organization: Woodfield Farm
Location: Mulmur, Ontario (Orangeville/Barrie/Collingwood area)
Woodfield Farm is 47 acres perched in the rolling hills of Mulmur Ontario. The area is a destination for hikers and cyclists, with the Niagara Escarpment traversing through our township. It is also an agricultural region with a growing number of small farm producers and those seeking great food experiences.
On our farm we raise heritage hens, Berkshire and Tamworth pigs, (in a forest setting) and shepherd a flock of sheep and their lambs. In the summer we pasture poultry and have a market garden. We participate in 2 local farm markets and have recently opened a store on site, featuring our meat and produce, as well as that of other local producers. This spring we planted a high density apple orchard which will come into production in 3 years time. It is a busy place!
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to participate in all aspects of the farm, while living on site, possibly with a visiting intern. Accommodation is in the original 1860's log cabin, which also houses the farm store. An accommodation fee will apply for those intending to live on site. Living on farm is not a requirement.
Your experience while with us at Woodfield will include, but may not be limited to:
Farm work is both challenging and rewarding and at the end of the day, most satisfying. Working with animals, plants and like minded people in the great outdoors is an experience like no other. You will need to be comfortable working with others and also on your own. In these times you will need to be self directed and at other times, work cooperatively with co-workers and customers. It will be necessary to be able to communicate your needs in relation to your work and respect the needs of your co-workers, approach challenges with a positive outlook and resolve issues as they arise. You must also be considerate and respectful to animals. Working outside in varied weather conditions is an expectation and there is repetitive tasks involved, especially in the garden where bending and kneeling are required. Feed bags are typically 25 kg and you need to be comfortable in carrying items of this weight and lifting small square bales of hay.
This employment experience focuses on livestock care and requires an individual comfort with both independent task assignments, as well as opportunities to gather and work in a team, especially on harvest days in the garden. Experience with farm equipment (tractor) would be an asset.
Your stay at the farm will commence in October 2017. Accommodation iincludes a private bedroom, ensuite bathroom and separate kitchen. Utilities and laundry are included.
We are seeking an individual with a keen interest in working with animals and who has experience in a market garden and a comfort level in planning and organizing the garden for the 2018 summer season.
Each week the work schedule may differ and winter hours, along with the shoulder seasons, will be part time and there will be more full time hours, when the garden is in production. There is a ski resort near by which hires on a large number of staff in the fall, for those looking to have additional income for the balance of the year. There are also other employment opportunities in the area.
