Woodfield Farm is 47 acres perched in the rolling hills of Mulmur Ontario. The area is a destination for hikers and cyclists, with the Niagara Escarpment traversing through our township. It is also an agricultural region with a growing number of small farm producers and those seeking great food experiences.
On our farm we raise heritage hens, Berkshire and Tamworth pigs, in a forest setting and shepherd a flock of sheep and their lambs. In the summer we pasture poultry and have a market garden. In addition, we participate in 2 local farm markets and have recently opened a store on site, featuring our own meat and produce, as well as that of other local producers. This spring we will be planting a high density orchard which will come into production in 3 years time. It is a busy place!
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to participate in all aspects of the farm, while living on site at our home with another visiting Intern.
Your experience while with us at Woodfield will include but may not be limited to:
Farm work is both challenging and rewarding and at the end of the day, most satisfying. Working with animals, plants and like minded people in the great outdoors is an experience like no other. You will need to be comfortable working with others and sometimes on your own. In these times you will need to be self directed and at other times, work cooperatively with coworkers and customers. It will be necessary to be able to communicate your needs in relation to your work and respect the needs of your coworkers, approach challenges with a positive outlook and resolve issues as they arise. You must also be considerate and respectful to animals. Working outside in varied weather conditions is an expectation and there is repetitive tasks involved, especially in the garden where bending and kneeling are required. Feed bags are typically 25 kg and you need to be comfortable in carrying items of this weight and lifting small square bales of hay.
This internship experience focuses on livestock care and requires comfort with independent task assignments, and also includes opportunities to gather and work in a team in the garden, especially on harvest days.
Your stay at the farm will commence in May and continue until October. You will have a separate bedroom and bathroom from the main part of the house. All meals will be provided and your assistance in meal prep is appreciated. A stipend will be paid monthly.
No experience is required but energy and interest is a must. We have a swimming pond where you can fish, canoe or laze about in off hours and lots of trails to explore.
Each week the work schedule may differ but generally you can expect to work 40 hours a week. We also make an effort to offer you different experiences by visiting other area livestock farms, bee keepers, gardens, tree farms and give you a varied experience full of opportunity to meet new people and learn from their expertise.
There is a further opportunity to stay on during the winter and reside in our 1860's homestead cabin and assist with reduced chores from November to April. This would be a paid position with 2 room accommodation and personal kitchen and bath facilities, utilities and laundry. There is a ski resort just a few kilometres away that hires on a large number of staff for the winter months, for additional income. There are also other employment opportunities in the area.
Please send a resume, cover letter, and two workplace references. See below for details.
We look forward to hearing from you.
