Accelerating the climate transition in Montreal

About the Greater Montreal Climate Fund

The Greater Montreal Climate Fund ("GMCF") is a newly established not-for-profit corporation that aims to support the reduction of GHG emissions in the region of Greater Montreal. Part of the Low Carbon Cities Canada initiative (LC3), with an initial endowment of $30M, the GMCF will act as a catalyst to develop the most promising and innovative low carbon solutions by investing its capital, providing grants, convening, influencing policies, and running programs. The GMCF strongly believes in the importance of acting with determination and agility in the fight against climate change, and to do so in collaboration with all the actors involved in the region.


The GMCF’s board of directors is looking for an Executive Director (ED) with the qualities of a builder and a mobilizer to set up and operationalize the GMCF. An intimate knowledge of the issues related to the fight against climate change in an urban environment is preferable. The successful candidate must above all demonstrate an entrepreneurial flair and have experience at the head of organization(s), where they will have demonstrated unifying leadership. The ED will help define the initial GMCF strategy, initiate its key partnerships and activities, and hire and lead the initial team. They will work closely with the new board of directors.

Key competencies

Entrepreneurship — The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial and will have demonstrated the ability to build a new organisation. Notably, they will need the ability to build a team, develop policies and partnerships, make strategic choices and initiate projects.

Leadership — The ideal candidate will develop an innovative vision for the GMCF and will mobilize the organisation’s internal and external stakeholders. They will lead the GMCF team with inclusive leadership, creating a work environment that is positive, collaborative and motivating, even in challenging or uncertain situations.

Networking and Relationship Building — The ideal candidate will develop and maintain a network of key contacts among stakeholders in the fight against climate change and will have demonstrated their capacity to establish cross-sectorial partnerships. Ideally, they will already be known for their work within the Greater Montreal community.

Communication — The ideal candidate will know how to express themselves with conviction and clarity in order to present and promote the GMCF’s mission and projects in various contexts, including to foster collaboration with key partners. They should be a skilled public speaker.

Planning and Organizing / Resource and Fiscal Management — The ideal candidate will have previous experience in management and organisational planning. They will define the GMCF’s priorities and manage its human and financial resources in order to reach the GMCF’s goals.


As the GMCF’s first employee, the ED will be the cornerstone of the organisation. They will be responsible for establishing and operationalising the GMCF, as well as leading its ongoing activities.

Responsibilities: initial steps to set up / operationalize the GMCF

  • Develop, with the Board of Directors and other key stakeholders, GMCF’s first strategic plan.
  • Hire staff to build the GMCF team and establish a thriving organizational culture.
  • Lead strategic and operational planning activities, including the development of policies and programs.

Responsibilities: ongoing activities

  • Act as the primary liaison with the board of directors and committees.
  • Support and/or lead the development of strategic and innovative initiatives.
  • Oversee, in collaboration with the Investment Committee, the prudent deployment of the GMCF’s capital assets in ways that drive mandate-related results while producing stable income. This could include selection and collaboration with fund managers, pending the selection of the VP Finance.
  • Lead and coach team members and implement processes aimed at developing skills and capacities while making professional development an integral part of organizational culture.
  • Represent the GMCF in the community, providing thought-leadership and establishing/maintaining partnerships.
  • Lead and/or support the GMCF’s fundraising requirements.
  • Act as the primary liaison with the LC3 network. Oversee reporting to LC3 and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, as per established agreements.


Required qualifications:

  • A strong and proven sense of entrepreneurship, and the ability to build a new organisation.
  • Executive-level experience in non-profit, private or public organizations, including proven success in board stewardship, staff management, program design, delivery and evaluation, and financial accountability.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise related to change management in complex contexts, ideally related to climate change.
  • Fluent in French and English (written and spoken).
  • Confidence in public speaking to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to gain the respect of external stakeholders and establish partnerships.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and to motivate a team.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgement, initiative, diplomacy and tact.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Sophisticated knowledge and understanding of urban climate change challenges and low-carbon solutions (and their barriers) including policies, practices, procedures, technologies, investments, etc.
  • Working knowledge of impact investment approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience and results in fundraising.
