Job Description

The Executive Director is the key management leader of Cycle Toronto. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, human resources, marketing, and community outreach. Some duties may be delegated to other senior staff but the Executive Director should be able to provide oversight and support in all areas. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.


Strategic Direction and Board Relations

  • Set the organization’s strategic direction, in collaboration with Board
  • Work with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach
  • Ensure campaigns and programs align with Strategic Plan
  • Work with the Board and staff to oversee program review and develop annual operational plan
  • Collaboratively build annual budget with revenue and expense projections based on input from staff and Board
  • Report to the Board on key performance metrics
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions

Partnership and Donor Development

  • Develop a strategy to scale donor and membership revenue in light of potential charitable status designation; work with staff to ensure targets are on track
  • Work with staff to ensure partnership and membership materials are consistent with Cycle Toronto’s Strategic Plan
  • Meet and build relationships with potential program partners, business members and major donors

Human Resources

  • Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate
  • Oversee management of staff team, currently six full-time staff
  • Periodically review staffing needs and make recommendations to the Board of Directors on changing requirements
  • Oversee the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff with support from the Board HR committee

Operations and Administration

  • Work with staff and bookkeeper to ensure monthly financial statement updates are accurate and delivered on time
  • Work with staff and bookkeeper to ensure invoices are sent in a timely manner
  • Review and approve staff budgetary requests
  • Responsible for signing all statements, agreements, and other instruments on behalf of the organization

Major Programs and Special Projects

  • Oversee planning and execution of major programs including Bike Month, Street Smarts Cycling Education, Ride Series and Bike Valet
  • Ensure the execution of partnership deliverables and special projects in the public, private and NGO sector; provide updates to the Board

Advocacy and Government Relations

  • Work with staff to build relationships with City staff, elected officials, Business Improvement Areas, Residents Associations and other not-for-profit groups
  • Support staff’s work in developing Ward Advocacy Program
  • Build relationships with advocacy partners and provide strategic advice
  • Oversee Advocacy Committee, strategic direction, and Cycle Toronto position statements
  • Review campaigns and programs to ensure alignment with Strategic Plan

Media and Communications

  • Act primary media contact or train and support primary staff media contact; liaise and build relationships with all categories of media
  • Oversee and support staff in writing, reviewing, and distributing all Cycle Toronto press releases to media list and social media
  • Provide input on content development for Cycle Toronto’s monthly Ring & Post e-newsletter and mailings


  • Minimum 2 years of senior nonprofit management experience
  • Experience building, tracking and executing an operational plan
  • Budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  • Experience setting and achieving fundraising goals
  • Proven track record managing small teams
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking
  • Fluent in English
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and facilitation

Strong Assets

  • Experience working with or on a board of directors
  • Experience in collaborative leadership
  • Experience working for a charitable nonprofit organization
  • Working knowledge of fundraising best practices
  • Government relations experience
  • Community organizing experience

What We Offer

Full-time, permanent position

Anticipated start date: December 2019

Salary range: $65,000 - $85,000
