TORONTO JOBS

Position: CMKO (chief Mama's Kitchen officer)
Organization: Mama Earth Organics
Location: Toronto, Ontario

The Role

The chief Mama’s Kitchen officer works with and reports directly to the CEO and is fully accountable and responsible for the growth and performance of the rapidly growing Mama’s Kitchen.

We expect Mama’s Kitchen to continue being the fastest growing part of Mama Earth Organics over the next 3-5 years. This side of our business is 12 months old and has grown rapidly over the past year. We’re seeing a number of clear opportunities and categories within our market (to fully distinguish ourselves) that we’d like to take advantage of for our members. There’s an opportunity to enter into a number of new categories and we now need the perfect person to lead, guide and scale this aspect of our business.

You’ll work directly with our head chef and sous chef (we’re lucky to have two true stars within each of these positions). You’ll have two direct reports (head chef and kitchen administration position) and be responsible for the whole department. You’ll also work closely with our marketing, operations and tech teams.

Mama’s Kitchen presently has a kitchen team of 6-7 people each day (presently doubling body count every 6-9 months). You’ll be responsible for long term strategic direction (with the CEO’s and board’s input). You’ll also be fully responsible for the strategic direction, implementation of strategy within Mama’s Kitchen, scaling operations and full P&L.

The ideal candidate will have experience within the food industry (ideally within a commercial kitchen) and will also have experience setting high level strategy and implementing projects (ideally within a high paced start up environment).

About Mama’s Kitchen: Mama’s Kitchen makes healthy organic prepared meals, salads, snacks and baked items from scratch each day. Mama Earth works with local organic farms and our offerings are based around our farms. We’re competing in a similar space as the “meal kit companies”, but are making things for a much pickier (foodie) and conscious customers. Our members are asking us to enter into a number of new categories that we’re excited to explore and enter into.

Experience & Skills

Things you’ll be responsible for:

  • Full P&L for Mama’s Kitchen
  • Strategic direction (prioritization of categories and implementation)
  • The continuous improvement of the standards and reputation of Mama’s Kitchen
  • Overall Curation (weekly, monthly, seasonally)
  • Long term strategy (choice and prioritization of categories)
  • Scaling and improving processes and operations (within Mama’s Kitchen)

Personality Type and skill set:

  • Excellent palate and incredibly high standards (you can always see how things can continually improve)
  • Understanding of trends and movements within our industry (and ability to differentiate between the two)
  • Love and passion for food (in particular, healthy, whole, organic food)
  • Strategic, long term thinker (while also an action oriented implementer)
  • Strong implementer (results oriented)
  • Ability to create short/long term plans and implement on self imposed deadlines
  • Ability to scale operations (from 7 to 30/50 staff over the next 3-5 years)
  • Deep understanding of the role we play for our members (ideally you can relate directly to our pickiest members)
  • Emotionally intelligent, mature and high level of common sense
  • A strong focus on implementation and results

Things you love:

  • You love having full ownership of things and moving quickly
  • You love (and are obsessed?) with healthy organic food
  • You love a fast moving, exciting environment (and super competitive industry)
  • You love working with super nice, smart people (and you love helping create an awesome environment and culture)

Ideal Experience:

  • 5+ years minimum experience in a leadership/management position
  • Background: We’re assuming the person will be an executive chef or have an executive or project management background (but are open to other backgrounds)
  • Education: We’re open to anything here. Most of our management team (and many of the extended team) have a high level of education, but we’re way more interested in practical/real world experience and proven past success/action.

“Nice to have’s”:

  • Executive chef (this would be ideal – but the business side of this position is more important – although a deep understanding and passion for food is necessary).
  • Leadership position (full ownership) within a fast-growing company (we move fast)
  • Deep interest and understanding of our industry (online food delivery, online meal delivery)

Hours/location: This is a full time position. This position will work from our Toronto location (19 Waterman) and could have the odd meeting (every few months) at our Peterborough location.

Perks & Compensation

Includes a generous salary (based on your experience level), excellent benefits program, “staff” pricing on organic food and produce, four weeks minimum vacation time. In addition, you’ll be working towards building something that you’re passionate about and proud of with really nice, smart people.
