We are looking for someone to coordinate the planning and hosting our largest event of the year, the Sustainable Business Expo! This Signature Event will be hosted virtually and span multiple days across 3 months, featuring multiple speakers, panelists and content streams. Our theme this year is Zero Waste and Circular Economy.

Job Purpose

The Sustainable Business Expo (SBX) Specialist will report to the Executive Director and take responsibility for the planning and hosting of the events leading up to and during the SBX. They will also assist the Executive Director and other staff with the development of our online program and supporting resources to contribute to the overall success of the SLP in driving impact in the Halton, Hamilton and Niagara Region communities served.

Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Planning the content and organising the agenda of the SBX;
  • Contacting potential speakers and panelists to fill the agenda;
  • Coordinating the deliverables of the project with our Volunteer team;
  • Working with the Creative Communications Coordinator to advertise and attract attendees;
  • Solicit sponsorships for the event as well as side events;
  • Research best practices in the key industries in the region related to the theme;
  • Create educational content to provide sufficient background knowledge for attendees;
  • Create records of methodologies for reference by staff after the end of the work term;
  • Identify and define process improvement opportunities through a final event report.


The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Event Management, Hospitality, Education, or related program. A strong interest or passion for sustainability and contributing to a healthy community would be preferred.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications, traits and abilities:

  • Experience planning and hosting large scale events and/or conferences
  • Research and report writing skills
  • Well organised and detail-oriented
  • Familiarity with G Suite and similar products
  • Positive, optimistic outlook and passionate about sustainability
  • Self-motivated, works well independently but thrives on teamwork
  • Proactive, forward-thinking
  • Outgoing, service-oriented, assertive
  • Excellent communications skills – verbally as well as written
  • Excellent time management skills

Additional requirements of our funders stipulate that the successful candidate must be:

  • Under the age of (not yet turned) 31
  • Unemployed, underemployed, or a student/recent graduate
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or holding refugee status

This position is being funded by a federal grant for 16 weeks, spanning August 3 to November 19, 2021, ideally. Remuneration is $20 per hour for a 37.5 hour work week.

Location of Work

The majority of this work will be conducted from home or other location as determined by the successful candidate. Occasional work and in-person meetings may be conducted if possible adhering to COVID safety precautions at the Sustainability Leadership Hamilton office or other location.

Training to enhance the foundation of the candidate’s knowledge in software and content development will occur via online training programs and guidance from other staff, whilst SBX knowledge and insight will be provided by the Executive Director.
